Been a Bad Week!!
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:00:29 AM »
Geez, when it rains, it pours!!! ::) Not just talking weather either, last weekend, we awoke to a soggy refrigerator, it quit sometime the day before apparently, water on the floor from melting ice in the freezer. Got it running again temporarily after some internet searches, thought it was a bad thermostat, then it quit again, did some more checking and found the defrost timer was bad which I was able to get running again by removing the motor from the timer and advancing it manually getting the fridge started again. So then we decided it was time for a new fridge since this one's 15yrs old, found a great buy at Lowes on a $2500 french door model (which is what the wife has wanted for a long time) for $1700, only problem is it's an inch too tall to fit under the cabinet as is most everything we could find that met her criteria!  ??? So the next couple days I spend modifying the kitchen cabinets to make room for it. Not only is the new fridge taller, it's much bigger and the doors have to be removed to even get it in the house, furniture rearrange a get it thru the house to the kitchen(older homes are a PITA  :-X). Now I have to get rid of the old fridge, we'll have to move it ourselves, my achin back.  :-[

Then my wife's brother calls, he's in the hospital with a broken collar bone and fractured hip, he's had terminal cancer for a few months now, it's gone into his bones, he lives 150 miles away, he's since been transferred to a rehab facility now and his condition has stabilized.

Needless to say, the long awaited range trip is on hold, maybe this coming week the stars and planets will align!  :-\

Could be worse my friend, it could be you with the terminal disease.  :-\

Any time I think I have it bad, I take a look around and realize that I am the lucky one (for now).  ;)

I had the same problem when my wife wanted a new fridge, had to do the cabinets and counter tops, it's never as easy as it seems.Sorry to hear about your brother-law, I've lost two friends this year to cancer and maybe another one to throat cancer, still waiting to hear from the doctor.

Thanks, the wife and I have both had our turn in the cancer barrel, I've been cancer free for 15yrs now from prostate cancer, she just passed the 5yr cancer free threshold with breast cancer after surgery and radiation treatment, her brother is a year younger than me, has led a very tough life of his own choosing, been stabbed, beat up, has two types of hepatitus, been thru drug rehab 3 times, drank and smoked most of his life, now has liver cancer.  :(

Tim,

Hope you get your range trip soon as you deserve and need some trigger time.  The smell of burnt powder has great therapeutic powers, or least that is what I tell my wife when I leave for the range a couple of times a week.

If that old fridge is running, why not put it in the garage, plug it in, let it run, and fill it with with a cool beverage of your choosing?  Maybe strip out the shelves, put in a through-the-door tap and keep a keg in there.  Or put it in the front yard with a sign on it for $25.00.  If the sign says FREE it'll sit there.  If somebody thinks it has value they will steal it!!!!!  Job DONE!

Thanks BB, but the wife is going with me, she wants to see where we hunt which is where I'm going to shoot, I told her it's an all day trip, but she still wants to go!!  ???

I don't drink beer, but I have considered using the old fridge, but don't really have any place to put it, no room in the single car garage, the only place I have room is in the basement down a steep set of stairs, the home was built in the early 40s. I've got rid of lots of stuff on craigslist, bought a few things too,  I'll list it for $150-$200 and sell it to the first $100 offer, the icemaker in it is awesome, someone will love it.  8)

Thanks George,

Sell it for $100 and buy you a new barrel.  Look at it this way, it is more than likely getting better from here.  Bad week, no doubt, but the chances are you are a handi away from a big grin and something else to play with.

Old refrigerators make great electric smokers. The method is cheating in my book, but there is something to be said for loading dinner on your way to work in the morning, and returning home to a perfectly smoked meal when shift is over...

Got the ball rolling on that already, I just bought a really nice 243 Superlight slick barrel from Oldsoldja, got it yesterday, it's one of the older shiney blued barrels with a perfect finish, it'll make an excellent 9.3x62 Mauser.  ;D

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have a really nice GMG Daniel Boone pellet smoker grill, plus a Mastercraft smoker and two Little Chiefs, pretty much got the smokers covered!  ;)

That's a thought, but not worth the break-in process, my wife is all broke-in and used to me, I'm too old to start on a new one, I have 30yrs invested in this one already!!  :P

Hi Tim
Sorry to hear about your calamities. Last year we renovated the kitchen and hired a handiman that was recommended by a neighbor. It was a testing time him being so slow. Our fridge makes a lot of noise and we need a new one but could not find one that fitted in the old spot. So the old fridge is still there and working ok. A new one will require cabinets to be remodeled a terrible job or a much smaller fridge, or move out and buy a new house, not a good option.
My 17 HMR malfunctioned and I could not fix it had to send it to the Winchester rep in Montral. When I got it back $235 later it still did not fire it had a brocken fireing pin which will take 6-7 weeks to come from Miroko in Japan. So I bought a Savage bolt gun in 17HMR and it will not stay on a crow at 100 yards. No wonder how it is held together. I been working  on it installed pillars and steel bed it at three points. Not quite done yet hope after all that work the gun will shoot at least an1-1/2" at 100. I thought the Savage guns were better than that. It was the only one available in that caliber which I like very much because it is the only caliber I can shoot around the cabin without having neighbor trouble and still reach out 100yrds to get these pesky crows. Prayers will be with you and yours Tim.  Those fridges are monsters and definitely not made for old houses with their smaller narrow doors.  8(  I had to take our door and hinges and one trim strip off to sneak one into one of our previous places.   :o   Not fun.

well, it wasnt an hour after reading this that my wife called and said our fridge was dead. We also have a house built in 1923, so i too had to take the doors off to get it in the house then put back together. Then take the doors off the old one to get it out. But i was lucky and had a half inch of space between cabinets and top of fridge , so no reconfiguration this time. I think maybe this was one of those jinx posts :)

4 (or is it 5) years on and our kitchen first, then the bath are almost done. Compared to them the bedroom remodel will be a snap!!!
