I heard a noise !
« on: June 06, 2012, 09:15:19 PM »
I was just posting away here and heard a metal lid hit the deck upstairs. I went up, turned on the lights and there is a racoon. Nailed it dead-center with my Gamo Viper 22. It ran off, wish I could use my H&R 410. If you dont blast'em regularly you end up with herds of them. Racoons are destructive, if they cant eat it, they screw it up. Skunks, have good manners unless they tangle with something. One night I may flip on the lights and face a cougar, armed with my airgun. Maybe I should take my 45 too [bluetips].

get rid of that airgun and get a .22 rifle. use agullira or cc caps , they are super quiet and will for sure kill those coons, cats, dogs, squirrels...

I do have Contender barrels in all the popular sizes including an s14 .22. There are other dwellings fairly close, I dont like to sling lead around much. If I could silence that single barrel 410 it would do the job.

We've had problems with raccoons and our chickens. Gamo air rifle in .17 at point blank range didn't do much good. .22 with cb caps convinced them to stay away forever. ;) gypsyman

Just set up a feeding station with a good backstop, and lighting,  and the lead won't be flying around. ear

Just be careful what you do and how much noise you make.  I was threatened today with a civil action if I didn't quit shooting on my property.  Truthfully, the HOA says not to discharge firearms.  So I sort of see their point.  But, I shot some dogs that were attacking my son's 4H rabbits.  State law says I can.  Yesterday it was a rattler in the front yard with a .45 and rat shot.  These darned folks here in Texas want to rule everything you do and make a law and make a rule and then only enforce the ones they want to.  From now on, I will never live anywhere that there is an HOA.  Don't care how far I have to drive to get to work.  Next time the rabbits get attacked... I'm sending the HOA a bill for replacement cost.  We had four, now we have three.  That's $150...  bet they won't pay.

Even here in CA you can terminate anything 'harassing or worrying' your livestock. This must be outside most cities and obey the laws concerning things like shooting across a road or too close to an occupied dwelling etc.  You can't do that in Texas?

Yep same law in Texas.  Any dog, coyote or cross that is about to attack, is attacking or has just attacked livestock or domestic animals may be killed.  I don't live in any city limits, just in the county.  But I do live in a subdivision (3-5 acres each)  and there is a Home Owners Association that likes to push whichever rule they want to push.  Agreement says no tractor trailers, there are at least three in the subdivision.  Agreement says control your dogs, no one does and they HOA won't send letters or threaten them.  Agreement says only 1 horse per acre, across the street has 7-8.  I try to protect my property according as allowed by state law and get threatening letters.  Sucks.  I think I would be safe but it really sucks that they could do something in civil fashion.

So anyway... even though I'm not in the city limits I have had to resort to .22 shorts and try for head shots.  Worked once...  of course the 12 gauge works much better. But the Hitler's of the world want to impose their will on the rest of us.

Every HOA I had any dealings with have been abusive. It is possibe to deal fairly with the members, but they never do.
