What is the best results with 100 grain .243 bullets
« on: June 04, 2012, 12:08:16 PM »
looking at the lengths of manufacture bullets it looks like sierra and speer has the smallest at 1.040-41 with the pro hunter and grand slam. I have previously tried to push the hornady btsp in a handi with no so good results and they are in at 1.080 inches. what 100 grainers have worked best for your handi rifle and the powders i have are h4895,h4350,imr4831.

I sold my stainless Handi .243 because I never did find a 100 grain bullet it would shoot.  Did OK with 80's but I wanted to use 100 grainers for deer hunting

I know you're not looking for factory ammo info, but I use Federal 100 grain ammo from Walmart ($14 for a box of 20), and typically get less than an inch at 100 yards for three shots.

I have done a bit of reloading, and am using Hornady interlock 100 grain bullets, part number 2450.  Using 39.5 grains of H4350, I have been getting 3/4" groups at 100 yards.

This is with a bull barrel.

Good luck.

To what end?  I mean what's the issue your looking to overcome?

The OAL of a projectile is of little consiquence. It's bearing surface will effect how it preforms they a given rate of twist. But all curretn .243 chambered rifles are built to stabilize all available .243 projectiles. Some barrels will show a affinity for a plain flat based bullet opposed to a boat tail. But this is not that common.

I also load a 100g in front of a 40g load on IMR 4350 in a couple different actions with excellent accuracy. I shoot mostly a Hornady 100g RN. I have also had excellent accuracy with a Sierra 85 hpbt and same powder.

My issue is that with two 243 handis that i previously had i could not get the hornady btsp or flat base sp to fly well with w760,imr4064 or h4350. I was always under the impretion that length of bullet combined with weight had lots to do with stability. Looking at 100 grain bullet lengths those two are pretty long compaired to the speer and sierra bullets. just looking to see if others have had success with those bullets or others. the round nose 100 grain you are talking about is the shortest 100 grain out there if correct. might give that a try. first of course i will try the hornady flat bases that i have and see what happens.

Without the stabilizing effects of rifling twist, yes your theory has Merritt. To a minuscule extent it still does but it's impossible for a hobbyist such as us, to differinciate.

This is where rifling twist rates come into play. The twist rate makes the difference.

Back at its I troduction Winchester saw this round as what most of us use it for today. A lite big game heavy varmint caliber. With a decimate "lean" to hunting game animals. Remington brought out the ballistic ally superior .244 with the onus on varmint and a rate of twist better suited to lighter projectiles. The public liked the dual use and the 243 gained in popularity while the ballistic ally superior round faultered. Remington tried to breath life back into the caliber by re labeling it 6MM and giving it a faster twist for the popular 100g bullets. But the damage was done.

Sierra used to make a short dumpy 100 gr for the .244. It had a short bearing surface to fool the slower twist barrel into stabulizing better...

Something I learned long ago, it's nearly impossible to "over stabilize" a bullet.

I had good results with Rem. Cor Locs.  Found some on sale and they worked well.  I also loaded some Sierra boat tail 95gr. with good success.

:)  Howdy! I don't reload but Rem Core Lokt ammo has done well in the 100 gr. I have used other brands and seem to favor the Rem. Always, Gene

I have to agree on twist rates. I know that the 107gr. is recommended only for 1:7 to 1:8 twist barrels and it seems aweful close to 100gr. that it may make a difference in some barrels. Ive used 90gr slugs in my 243 and 6mm rem with great results.

I have owned several 243 handi barrels and all shot well with certain loads. It seems this cartridge in a Handi is a bit picky. I burned several pounds of powder in a superlite barrel and a couple hundred bullets only to find it shot the Federal 100 gr. factory load the best. I also tested several under 100 gr. bullets on deer and found the 80 gr. Remington soft point to be a very quick killer on deer with broadside hits. I tend to use H414 in this cartridge.
