Can you identify this NE track?
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:08:25 AM »
Out Hiking with wife in VT,  came across this track.

Can you identify ?

Impression was quite deep indicating to me critter has a bit of bulk associated with it.

Could just be a big dog that needs a nail trim. It looks too big for a coyote. In NE Oregon we occasionally get the report of a wolf or wolverine track. I have no clue about the possibility in Vermont.

If it's canine , it's coy , as we were very remote,  at least 10 miles within interior,  away from any human or domestic population, and not and not on any traveled trails. This track appears to be more Feline than canine to me.

Here is a link Canine vs Feline , perhaps some experts could join in and identify

Great link. After studing the link it looks like a hind foot of a big cat (Mtn Lion? Lynx?) to me.

I would agree with Mack.  If it were feline, there wouldn't be any claw marks.

The reason I thought it's a cat was the rear claws don't contract like the fronts and the nail marks are so sharp like narrow cat claws. A wild canine usually has fairly short, blunt nails on the back feet that are worn down. I suspect it is a rear cat paw tract but concede the wet sand could have narrowed the slices made by the nails to resemble a cat claw mark.

For sure it's canine. I suspect someone else might have taken a walk, and took their big dog. Soft dirt, or mud, means deep tracks.

Looks like the print that my Greater Swiss Mountain Dog leaves on our beige carpet after a bathroom break outdoors.

I have a very large dog and similar ground material near my home.  She has never made a track similar to that track.  I do not believe it is canine.

Not Wolverine.  I'd say a domestic dog.  Domestic dogs usually have long claws since they don't run enough in rough country to wear them down.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Nerver have seen a Wolverine track in person (NM boy)......just shows.  All my muts wear their nails down.  I have one ole blind girl who's nails I trim.  I will bow to Sourdough on this one.  Still not sure about the K-9.
