« on: February 02, 2004, 06:35:16 AM »
Does anyone have one of these?  I would like to find out what kind of velocity I could get in a 357 Maximum Carbine with 200 gr bullets in a good strong action.
....make it count

I've heard of smiths who do this conversion on Winchester 94's.  I was thinking of having one converted, but bought a 45LC instead.

This is one of the smiths that I e-mailed who thought he could do it.
I do not work as a smith, but completed the gunsmithing school at lassen college in Susanville.  From what this guy told me in the E-mail, I think he can get the job done at a reasonable price.
I do not know his work first hand, but I can usually tell if someone knows what they are talking about when it comes to guns.

357 Max velocites in carbines

Robert:  from the 357 mag, you can get a 200 gn bullet out to 1300+'/sec with a 6" bbl.  Add an additional foot of barrel to that in the carbine and enhance the performance with a closed chamber and you might get close to 2K'/sec.  Further improve that performance with the 357 Max case and I do not doubt you will see that 200 grainer moving out at better than 2K.  Now, that would be something.

BTW, there are a couple of 200 gn cast bullets out there you might be able to use.  Anything gas checked for the 35 caliber rifles in 200 gn RN should be good, and there are some 200 gn RNFPs that might do the trick and, my favorites, the 200 gn SWCs fro Colorado Cast Bullets.  HTH.  Mikey.

I now have two 357 maximum rifles. One NEF synthetic handi and a Rossi. I just reamed them both. I still need to get my powder so I can start reloading. I'm going to get a chrono. this summer so I can see what velocity I'm getting. The NEF as a 22'' barrel and the Rossi is 23''. I'll post my results when I get it done.

Several years ago I took some 192gr. RCBS Silhouette .35 caliber cast bullets (w.w. + 2% tin, heat treated) and ran them nose first into a .349" sizing die for about 2/3rd's of their length.

This allowed them to be loaded into .357 Magnum cases to the same o.a.l. as the .357 Maximum, the sized nose portion of the bullet extending up into the bore of the barrel.

I fired these in my  Rossi .357 Magnum rifle w/ 20" barrel.  These had to be single loaded since they are way too long to feed from the magazine. I used 296 powder and Rem 7 1/2 primers.  Velocity was   2,082 f.p.s. for 5 rounds.

Accuracy was very good and the point of impact was 15" higher at 100 yards than with the standard .357 Magnum load.

Fuunnn indeed!
