I would think that his father's death would have been a significant clue about lethal sensitivity. For most people who are bitten by rattlesnakes, it's not a fatal event provided they get medical care. Some people have recovered on their own, after a period of illness. Fatal rattlesnake bites are relatively rare.
 
I don't recall that The Bible says anything as blunt as "don't tempt fate", but there are plenty of sayings like that in The Bible.
 
I'm not sure if children are protected by law from this "snake worship" cult, but here's a case where the kid grew up, then died because of something his father taught him.

Jesus was speaking to the apostoles when He said that.
And all of "them" could do all those things.
If one were to read the whole bible they would understand that these gifts was not given to everyone.

M-G WILLY. Good post Sir. I don't take that scripture to mean that we should intentionally drink poison either. If God tells you to do it, fine, if it's to prove a point to others, NOPE. I don't know of any of those snake handling churches, wouldn't go to one. I heard of a preacher visiting a church like that. He was at the pulpit when they brought in a sack full of rattlers. He lookedc at his wife and said, wheres the back door, she said, aint none. He said, ask em where they want one. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Locally they have some of these snake handlers. They start the children off at a young age with watered down strychnine doses. By the time they are adults they have built up an immunity and are able to drink it straight to show the brothers and sister the extent of their faith.


About 10 years ago one of their preachers was convicted for trying to kill his wife with the snakes. According to what the trial revealed he had a girlfriend about half his age. He couldn't divorce. So twice he beat the snake cage with a pipe to rial them up, grabbed the wife by the hair as if to force her in and stated if she didn't put her hand in he would push her face in the cage. She was bitten on the hand.
 He was a twice convicted felon so they got him on a 3 strikes law. He is serving 99 years for attempted murder.

Snake handlers gotta love em.  I went to a church not knowing they were snake handlers. Was a very interesting service.  Didn't bother me a bit, however I don't make it a practice to attend there or handle snakes.

   You found a verse which 'encompassed' the great commission..but you did not quote the "great comission", which was vs 15 alone:
 
      " And He said to them, Go into all the world  and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16;15)....
 
  If you look closely at what you quoted..that is not a commission..but rather a enumeration of the protective gifts, as He gave them to the original 12.

People practice this snake handling stuff as a faith or as a tourist attraction or even just an ethnic cultural thing in one form or another from the southern tip of India to all over South East Asia and the Islands.
 
 I've seen it in Sri Lanka as an entertainment and in your more rural communities in Guam and Thailand where families of a dozen or so people are packed into single room "houses" if you will. They've got 8 year old girls wearing make-up and high heels handling poisonous snakes, some cloaked cobras I think, but I kept my distance! I HATE SNAKES.
 
It is like a ritualistic dance that that the mothers pass to daughters. Strange sh**. People are very friendly and extremely hospitable, welcoming you into their homes and such. Although one should tactfully avoid this as the damn snakes run free in the homes and yards. And they claim no females are ever bitten, but I have my doubts.
 
Off topic, but I'm all of 5'-9" and I felt like a damn GIANT there. The people are like little Asian "Hobbits".
 
Note also that I only witnessed this in the homes of certain select few, not everyone. And yet it is not seen as unusual at all by anyone in the community.
 
...and it makes me wonder.
And no, Christianity is not the predominant faith over their. Not too sure what is.

Did I mention that I HATE SNAKES....I HATE EM like spiders! And over there, there are spiders that are as big as your damn foot that could carry off your chihuahua if it got the chance.
 
Maybe a spider handling faith might be a little safer :D  yeaugh!!!

I know of a missionary to Africa who preached every night to a certain tribe. No one came forward to recieve Christ the whole week.  Then after about a week, the whole tribe came down to get saved.  Chief said they put enough poison in the preachers food to kill two men.  Never bothered him.  That was proof enough for the tribe to know Christ is real.  I think the scripture means if something like that happens, God will keep those preaching the Gospel safe to show His power and get converts.  Scripture also says not to put God to a foolish test.  Have to take it all in balance.  Lots of miracles still happen.  I've seen some myself.  Black woman behind me went up one night to get prayed for her catarack (sp) surgery.  Came back and sit down crying.  I asked her what happened, she said they fell out and she could see again.  Didn't need surgery.  Usually not mainstream because no one would believe anyway, but it gets people saved or healed.
