Primer question
« on: May 28, 2012, 05:13:19 PM »
I was priming some 30-30 cases this evening and got one of the primers in up side down , what's the easiest and safest way to get it out?  :(

After re-lubing run it slowly back into the sizer decapping die.  I have never had one go bang but as a precaution I lay a rag or towel over the die and area around the ram just in case.

yup, just push it out with the de-capper.
Go slow, the towel is a good idea, or saftey glasses.

The towel and safety glasses are both good ideas, I keep a universal de-capping die on hand they are cheap and no need too re lube or re-size the case with them. I mainly use it for crimped primers but sometimes a primer will get in backwards. In 40 years I have never had a primer go off popping a live one out, but the potential is there.

Put the sizer die back in the press and GENTLY push the press lever until the primer falls out.  Worse case scenario it goes pop and you lose a primer to experience.

thanks guys. I did a little of all of the suggestions :)   I sprayed it with WD-40, put a towel over the press,  and slowly ran it through. worked great... primer is out and no BANG!  ;D .
I have never had one go off on me but I have heard of it happening, I didn't want to take a chance. once again thanks for the help guys.

By design the anvil of the primer generally needs a surface to bottom out on so that the primer compound can be compressed with enough force. Without such backing generally there is not enough compressive force beween the anvil and primer cup to ignite the primer compound between them.  Not to say it can't happen  but it is very unlikely.  Regardless precautions are easily accomplished without any special tools.
Just another worthless opinion!!

The rag is a good idea but lets not forget hearing protection.

when I first started reloading  I got a lee loader that was in a small box . You used a wood mallet to drive out primers and then to seat new ones. I know I did something wrong like get the case off center in the base it sat in while you hammer away with the mallet but one mag pistol primer went off . It wasn't all that loud , less than a 22 short. But little pcs. of stuff ( hot stuff) went everywhere . Safety glasses are a great idea.

I started with a Lee Loader too and had the same experience you just described. Talk about an eye opener! It scared the crap out of me! I broke down and bought a press and die set shortly after that happened.
