Cam roller assembly in CZ-52's, what is its function?
« on: February 01, 2004, 11:38:35 AM »
The cam roller unit in CZ-52 pistols, what is its function?  Does it help in softening the recoil, or is it a chambering thing?

Also, what is the history on these, is this something that became obsolete recently with the Czechs, or did they replace these 1950 vintage guns years ago with their CZ-75's and just keep the CZ-52s in reserve?

Thanks.

They are bearings....

Not unlike bearings on your car or a machine to keep parts from wearing where there is excessive pressure and friction.  The rollers are also part of the design for locking the slide when it fires.

I also read of the risk of dry firing, could break the pin.

After doing more research I had read that the firing pin can break from dry firing on the CZ-52 pistols, oh that is bad news as I did not know and have dry fired the pistol 4 times to check for function after a field strip!
There is supposed to be aftermarket parts for these and has anybody tried the improved pin, as it supposedly allows the gun to be dry fired and lightens the trigger pull as well?

Also, I found the pistol to be dry internally, the only oil I saw was on the firing pin, and a small drop near the extractor.  I would suggest that all owners of these guns strip down and oil/grease accordingly before shooting.

I too, am thinking of getting another as they seem like nicely made guns for the price.  I would like to shoot the pistol first to see if it is decent.  I have the phosphate finished with the date of "53", any suggestions on something different and interesting for me to look for?  I could also add wooden grips as some fellows have done, looks nice in the photos.

Has anyone put one of these CZ-52s through a heavy workout over time to see if they hold up?  I know they have been coming into the country for many years, so there must be lots of them around, one web site said the Czechs made around 250,000 of them.

Thanks
