Found a new Handi to bring home
« on: May 17, 2012, 03:35:49 PM »
A couple of nights ago I found a listing at a gunshop for a Handi in 35 Whelen.  The listing described it as 95%.  So yesterday I called and put it on hold.  I checked the serial # and found it was made in Gardner in 2006.

Today I went to check it out and found it looked new.  To make it even sweeter I got them down from $180.00 to $165.00.  Needless to say I forked over the money and hit the door.

And finally to make the deal even sweeter, it functions perfectly.  Knowing of the problems with the 35 Whelen, I took some factory ammo with me and stopped at the gun range on the way home.  No misfires.  Some days it just works out.

Robert.

See That is what we need more people to tell their GOOD stories about Handi's!  So all the new folks will buy in!  ;)

BB,
Now I am.....unfortunately. This place is no Hilton Resort, closer to the Hanoi Hilton.... :( Outgoing fire woke me this morning. I was just glad that it wasn't incoming... :o :o

Robert,
Many of us have found that Remington ammo gives us more FTF issues in the Whelen than all other brands. I'm curious to know if the problems may have been resolved or if you were using another brand that is more reliable.

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny,

The ammo was Remington.  I bought 200 rds. of it several years ago from a shop going out of business.  So this is older ammo being shot out of a Gardner era Whelen.  I gave myself a 50/50 chance that this new gun would function without problems but for the price and condition I had to buy it.

On a different thread I reported a Whelen barrel that we couldn't get to function without misfires.  Last week I pulled it out of the closet and fit it to a different frame.  It went through two boxes of Remington ammo with no misfires.  It looks like I've now got two 35 Whelen Handis that are working properly, even with the factory ammo.  As I load for them I'll be making sure that the brass is sized to the chamber to avoid problems.

With two Encores in 35 Whelen and the two Handis I've now got four 35 Whelens that are legal for Miss. primitive hunting season.  With me spending a good amount of time at my home there this provides me with  plenty of spares for family and friends who come down to hunt with me.
