Monson 357 MAX at local shop
« on: January 31, 2004, 01:09:45 PM »
Hello Everybody,
This is a great place you have here.

I walked into the local gun shop and there it was, Dan Wesson 357 MAX,
Eight inch barrel in the blue #B001157.
No box, no tools, with a super take me home price.

Very nice shape, but the cylinder latch is weak.
I will bring it to the smith next week.

I had to share my joy, take care.

Why 357 Max?
« Reply #1 on: February 01, 2004, 09:01:33 AM »
Question: Elgin Gates developed the 357 Super Mag.  DW chambered their Super Mag revolver for the 357 Super Mag.

So why is the barrel shroud marked 357 Maximum?

The 357 Maximum is a different cartridge, and deserved or not, it has a bad reputation as a revolver cartridge.  The 357 Super Mag cartridge never suffered from the bad press.  The 357 Maximum is essentially yet another example of the factories taking a wildcat that works and fixing it until it doesn't.  (The 357 Maximum is a shortened version of the 357 Super Mag.)

While a 357 Maximum cartridge can be chambered and fired in the DW Super Mag, the 357 Super Mag cartridge will not chamber in the Ruger 357 Maximum.  Ruger did not want to make the frame window long enough to take the Super Mag.

Just to muddy the water, I buy Winchester 357 Maximum brass and when I measure it, I find it to be Super Mag length.  Not that I'm complaining.  I load the cartridge to 357 Super Mag specs.  The difference in case length is quite small, the difference in OAL is what really counts.  I've never run a 357 Max through my DW.

So all is well, and I'm in hog heaven except for wondering why DW marked the revolver 357 Maximum.

Ok.  I'm jealous!  I'm looking for a .357 SuperMag.  I've been SuperMag CRAZY ever since I bought my .445 SuperMag.  I love everything about these calibers, except the price of the brass!

I'd LOVE to have a .357 SM to mount a scope on and try and take a deer or two next season.  Heck.  I'd just love to do some 100 - 200 yard handgunning!

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I brought the DW 357 MAX to the smith
to have the weak cylinder latch looked at. Charlie looked at it for about
two minutes and said "Look around for ten minutes".

Ten minutes later he gave me the max and I gave him 7.50 cash money.

The Max shoots great and is alot of fun.

Take Care
