need your help valueing these handguns
« on: May 13, 2012, 03:59:50 PM »
my 80 yr old father came down today with these handguns asking me what they were worth. a guy is wanting to trade them to him as partial payment for a horse he is asking 5500$ for.he is a mounted shooter and very good at it. and also at training horses for it.
i have no more than a close idea what these guns are worth.
colt trooper with a 4 inch barrel, looks like nickel, orig grips, very nice.a couple of the cylinder flutes have a bit of pitting, trigger pull is very nice in both modes.id give it a 85 percent.
smith 44 mag , 6 3/8 inch barrel, looks nickel with rubber grips.not sure if its a 29 or 629. im really not up on smiths.id giv it a 90 percent.trigger pull is awesum.it doesnt look like its been shot much at all.red ramp front and white outline rear site.if these were rugers id know all about them but im just not up on these particular guns. any help would be appreciated.

blue dog, thats what im thinking but the guy is talking like they worth 1600$ for the pair.the smith is actually a 29-2. and the colt tho a colt mk3 and a sweet gun has sum freckeling rust on the cylinder. based on what ive found ive told my dad not to get any deeper than 1k in them.he or i have no use for them. allthough if i was a 44 man that smith has about the sweetest action ive ever run across.not to mention it will take me  maybe a year to sell them for what they worth here in hillbilly heaven.i just dont have a lot of guys looking for high end pistols in this depressed area. and it will be winter before i have time to go to any gunshows and sell them. thanks for yur response!

The Colt would go closer to $800 retail, but on a trade like that unless one of you really want them I would give about $450 to the Smith, and aprox $550 to $650 for the Colt.  So if you do not want them you can sell 'em and at least break even.

i was thinkin the colt might bring more, just cuz it a colt and also a very nice handgun. id not be surprised if it did bring what you quoted. but i cant put my dad out there that far and not be able to deliver.i would want it for myself if i did not have about 4 357 guns already.and breaking even is not a option. we like to make a little "for your trouble" money as well.but thats just the german in us. do appreciate your info, hope i can help yu as well down the road!

last time I looked up Dad's Colt Python even allowing 80% the book value was $1,200, so it depends on how bad you want to make a deal.  If your local market will only support $350 for them use that number.  Remember you can sell them on an auction board (for a reserve) or at auction (with reserve) or consignment sale at a local dealer (priced to move, but allowing room for the dealer to make a buck or two as well.
