I'm saying there never should have been a civil war. Lincolns methods, such as giving foreigners citizenship if they join the Union to kill Americans, allowing Sherman to shell civilians and then after the war the Union went about stealing everything it could. If you think the South fought only for slavery you are a fool and slavery was just one of the excuses Lincoln used to justify the war. Secession was his most worrisome point though he was eloquent on slavery, like Obama on "Hope and Change". As far as nationwide opinions go I say it depends on where you are in the nation. The phrase "War of Northern Agression" really means something. If you are so blind to believe what is written in schoolbooks (revisionist history books) then you easily fit into the group of naive nationwide opinions. If you cared you could drive through states like Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and find hillsides covered with graves of young men who never owned slaves or desired to. Read some books on the Civil War written during the time period if you can find them. Or just do as you are and stay naive. In fact in the states listed Yankee's are considered pretty low scum. The use of slavery by Lincoln as an excuse to make war on his own citizens is the deep rooted base for racism against Blacks. While you are opening your mind you might look into slavery in the time period before the Civil War, check into who was selling the slaves (in Africa) and what would happen to them if they had not been sold as slaves. Funny how the history books don't tell that story.
