O. T. - Move over Dremel!
« on: May 08, 2012, 12:24:52 PM »
This Friday,  I get to play with an Endmill on the chamber end of a couple of my Handi barrels. 8)   All my work will be supervised by an experienced operator and the barrels are mine, so no potential lawsuits. :o

c1skout,

These are 50 cal Huntsman barrels that have been modified to 50-70 Govt. BP Cartridge Rifles.   The notch we are milling is in the face of chamber at six o'clock.  IIRC, there is information in the FAQ sticky on how to convert an extractor to an ejector, but it might be information on the reverse conversion.   BTW, if you see any of my posts with pictures you will know that any photos I take would be absolutely worthless in helping to understand a procedure.   Me and cameras do not get along. :-[

Have the guy "helping" you with the work take the photos.  I would love to see the progress of the work with photos.  I don't know about everyone else, I understand something a lot better when I read about it, and actually see it being done, and/or have pictures to relate it to.  Either that or to actually do it (hands on).

What I don't understand is how, your going to make a chamber for a cartridge rifle from the Huntsman barrel, without cutting the chamber area off, redoing the chamber area to get rid of the threads, or inserting a chamber adapter of the correct size into the threaded area.  Guess I just can't picture it. :-[

Thats the basic idea , make a insert that threads into the area were the breach plug goes , once that is epoxied in to fill that void , you just run a chamber reamer in and Wa-la , 50/70 BP cartridge rifle  ;D

OSR  The new insert really does not need to be epoxied in the chamber, it was done just as a precaution to be sure it never loosens or moves.  The breechplug is approx. 1 1/4 " long and after the new insert is installed and reamed there is a joint there between the insert and the start of the bore but it is invisible on the fired brass.
The 50-70 case is 1 3/4" so when the round is fired and the gas pressure blows the case walls out to seal the chamber from blow back this joint does not see any gas cutting or direct contact with the hot gasses so there is no problem.
Fired cases come out without any indication that there is a joint in the chamber.  :)

I would think the HD red Locktite for sleeves and bearings would do fine for locking that insert in.

Couple of pics attached of the ejector notch installation.  The rest of the ejector installation is still a work in progress.  The Huntsman underlug is solid on the bottom instead of open like a shotgun or CF rifle barrel.  We have a couple of ideas for the ejector but haven't finished one yet.

BB - Thanks for the pics, I definitely like being able to follow your progress on the 50-70BP.

BTW - the pictures are pretty good.  No too shabby, if I say so myself.
