What's the going rate for used mini 14s?
« on: May 06, 2012, 04:04:57 AM »
About what should one expect to pay for a used mini 14 these days?  How much more does a stainless fetch than a blue?  How are the older models compared to the newer ones?  Any specifiic areas that want closer inspection when looking one over?  Thanks for any input.

On the Ruger forum there's a fair amount of these.  They are mostly $450ish for blued and $550ish for used guns.  New ones will cost you a bit more.

thats about the prices i see around here. a stainless ranch will be on the higher end. sometimes the older wood handguard guns will be on the higher end.ive no experience with the new generation of the mini 14. if you can get any mini 14 in good condition for 400$ id have to say its a pretty good buy.

I looked for over a month for a used mini 14. And the $450 to $550 was right on for price, I did a lot of research, what I found the older models are much less accurate than the newer models. Magazines are a big concern, as they do cost 2 to 3 times that of AR mags, CDNN was the best price I found for Ruger factory mags. I did buy two Tapco Generation 2 Mags that seem to work well. From all I read while researching the Mini, I went ahead and bought a new one, price in my area was $639.00 New. A new one may be a little hard to find, I read Ruger is not taking any more new orders for any firearms till the end of May.

Why a used vs new?  The newer tappered barrel design is more accurate thab the straight barrel design.

The best price I could find for new mini 14 and mags is CDNN.  If you live in TX you will pay the sales tax...

CDNN did have a better price on new than I paid, but I wanted the wood stock and you did not have this option in the Mini 14 at CDNN when I bought mine.

The reason I posted was because of a speciffic possable local deal.  A friend of mine told me a guy he knows is planning on selling off a number of guns, including a couple of mini14's.  If and when the deal comes together I may be interested in one.  I know they aren't the most accurate rifle in that caliber and I know they have their issues, their supporters and detractors.  My interest is kind of sentimental.  The Mini14 was a rifle that left an impression on me in my youth, so the possability of picking one up for reasonable money caught my attention.  I figured a little poking around the net (cruising gunbroker, asking here) would give me an idea of what to expect and what may be fair to me and to my friend.  He's got an FFL and I don't, so if the guy parts with his guns they all go there first.  I'm just angling to get first picks through the catch.

Honestly, I have trouble stomaching the price of a new Mini14.  It's a lot of money for an OK gun.  But I want one, so I'm always tempted to see if I can get one for a price I see as a little more reasonable.  I may just be stuck on my idea of what something should cost, not adjusted for the 'new' value of the dollar.

Depending on the application the Mini 14 could be a more than OK gun.  IMHO it is not a tack driver like the AR platform rifles, BUT if you need a gun to always go bang when you pull the trigger the Mini 14 fits the bill.  Remember the loudest sound in the world is click when you needed bang.

If you are going to use it as a home defence gun  it will be ok. How ever if your going to hunt with it  do not buy an old one . Go to perfectunion.com and check out the fixes .
Even the new ones need a little messing with. My new ranch stainless  model needed to have the crown polished  and I had to buy a tool from Brownells to fix it after that it shot good.
You will go broke trying to get an old one to shoot.
