quick takedown
« on: May 05, 2012, 10:52:02 AM »
Has anyone redesigned their Handi to make it easier to take down, possibly with no tools? I guess what Im saying is, its my understanding that the forearm screw has to be removed to remove the barrel. How could I change it so that no tools are needed?  Thanks, Dave

Yep, I use a s/s thumbscrew.  In my switch barrel case it's there in between the receiver and forearm by the end of the .45-70 barrel with the hooded sight.

Thanks Tackle thats just what I was looking for. I think I have even seen one of those that folds over...off to search the internet!

I have a smaller trunk that I use to keep all of my hunting clothes, boots, light etc. I just thought it would be nice to be able to take down my Handi, and have it inside, then have to just carry the one box to the camp....Dave

I did a quick search and found some nearly identical to the dimensions of mine.  The one I'm using is smooth headed and was from a previous project and I don't have a part number for it.  These from McMaster-Carr are similar, but knurled on the edge which is better than smooth in my opinion.  There is a part number in the image below for the s/s and black oxide versions which are the correct length, but the brass one is a bit long.  Because brass is soft, however, it'd be easy to file to just the length you want anyway.  ;)  Hope it helps some.  ;)

tacklebury - My fore end screws measure from 1/2" to 5/8", so the brass one seems to fit the bill.

I think someone mentioned that the fore end screws for the newer synthetic stock sets are longer.  I don't know for sure since I don't have any of those.

Yep it does depend on the forend shape some. 3/8" is too long with the schnabel forend and the huntsman barrel, so may vary some.  The one I'm using is .43 and it's a bit longer than I'd really like, but 1/2" might work great with some others.  It should be possible to get a longer one and file/grind it down some if it's a bit long for each application.

Take the regular fore arm screw.  Carefully center in a drill press, drill to size for a tap that will thread the swivel screw into.  Use red loc tite on the swivel screw.

Contact H&R for a replacement forearm screw-bolt they issue with their 'Survivor STORARMS.'  If its a little long, suppose it could be cut off 1/8th or 1/4th of an inch with a Dremel tool.

Or ..... I might just find a hex wrench that fits the usual forearm screws, but cut the hex wrench so most of what could be called the long-shaft portion is epoxied into a [donor] screwdriver handle.  I'd make a couple of those and put them on lanyards to hang on my neck when using said riffle or riffles!

Ford Explorer (90's) roof rack crossbar adjuster bolts are 1/4-20 with a big plastic end, similar to the storearm bolt.

To keep the bottom of the forearm smooth I am using slotted brass screws I picked up at Lowe's.  The slot is wide enough that I can use a coin for screw driver.  Well, a nickel won't work but a quarter will.  I would have thought the quarter was thicker but it doesn't work that way.

Anyway, I always seem to have a coin in my pocket when it comes time to take off the forearm, and this way I don't have anything hanging underneath it to hit my hand when the gun recoils.

WH - Your idea is theoretically better, but what happens when you don't have a coin with you.  That's what usually happens to me.  I have a habit of emptying my pockets of change when I get home.  Somehow, all the coins somehow usually end up in my wife's purse.

Give Choate a call ,they'll send you a thumbscrew from the survivor forend for like $2.00 -you need to know fine (1/4-28) or coarse(1/4-20) threads and you'll have to trim for length...thread a nut on first to clean the threads as it comes off....

I replaced mine with a slotted pan head screw. Coins or keys will take it off in a jiffy.
