Loading for the .22-250 today.
« on: May 02, 2012, 11:43:14 PM »
Brass and dies came in yesterday.  I have a horde of  .224 52 gr. HPBTs so I'm gonna try them today.  I'm eager to try the "new" rifle with the Tasco Euro-Class.  Any ideas out there?

Another question:  Why is the .223 rifled 1 in 9 and the .22-250 1 in 14 shooting the same bullet?? ??? ??? ??? ???

The 1:9 twist .223 should be able to shoot (without keyholing) up to 77 gr bullets.  The 1:14 22-250(which I have) is limited to 55 gr bullets (some loads 60 gr).  1:12 (TC barreled 22-250) shoot 63 gr pretty well also.  22-250 is smaller bullet and faster.  .223 is slower but more varied with regards to bullet weight (because of twist).  I have both and am glad they have the same bullet size for ease of reloading.
Try 38 gr H380 with your 52 gr BT.  Some 22-250 barrels don't shoot BT bullets well.  I tend to stick to flat based bullets in my 22-250.  Try them and see.  Bt bullets are good at long range.

Pete, try a mid range load  of 4895 ,4064,H380,H414. I have loaded the 22-250 since it became legit back in the last century.I have had good results with the above powders and the 52gr boattails. I would not be worried about the max loads as the mid range still produce plenty of velocity and less flame cutting that cause barrel erosion.Oal seems to be better left a little on the long side with  about .010 jump to the lands and I do not crimp the bullets.
Good Luck

Thanks Gerorge.  I was thinking exactly that.  I have two pounds of H4895 and was going to try 34 gr. which should be about 35 - 36 hundred fps.  More than enough for what I want to do.  I'll chrony it today if the rain holds off.

Pete, I used Hodgdon 50gr Sierra data for H4895 and the 50gr Vmax in my H&R 22-250, shoots under an inch, lots better than the factory ammo I ran thru it, have fun!  ;)

Pete,

My wife's 22-250 does real well with the 36 grain Barnes VGs over a start load of Ramshot TAC.

Tim and Tom, thank you.

Now I've got a minor problem.  First of all, this is an extractor.  2004 manufacture on the frame with matching numbers on the lug.  Would have to be an accessory barrel, No?  If I'm right, a NEF would be an ejector.  I neck sized new Remington brass and it slides in over the extractor if you're not real careful.  Fired brass does a little better, but not much.  There's a lot of gap between the case and the extractor.  I was thinking of grinding a little off the top of the extractor and at the same time putting a little more Umphf in the spring.  As it is now, the spring seems to be working properly.  It's holding the extractor up as far as it can go.  Good or bad idea?  Thanks,

Pete

2004 was the first year they offered extractors, it would be a 1st gen type with the staked slotted screw on the bottom of the underlug, I believe it's an adjustment for spring tension, but I've never messed with either of mine, Brian would know tho.  ;)
