Remington brought out the 788 as their cheaper model, and it out shot the 700 in a lot of cases. I had one in .243, and wish I still had it.

carl - a lot of folks absolutely swear by theirs. Minbe was boat anchor quality and gave me nothing but headaches and missed shots. I traded it for a nice Winchester 30-30.

But, I preface my comments with the caveat that my experiences with my particular 788 are not openly reflected by other 788 owners. As I mentioned above, many folks swear by theirs.

I'm of the crowd that swears by theirs. I own two, a .243 and a .308, they are the two most accurate center-fire rifles in my battery, and that includes a Savage 110 in .308, a M70 in .30-06, and a M700 in .223. The .243 my father bought for $99 new, I bought the .308 for $285 in excellent condition. Have had zero problems with either rifle, and if I could found a cheap one .223 with a shot-out bore, I'd rechamer to a Tactical .20 in a heartbeat, that's my feeling on the issue.

Carl,

You are asking about the carbine model I believe which has the 18-1/2" barrels. Rem brought these out for about the last three or four years that they made the rifle. There is no difference between the carbine and regular model except for the length of the barrel. Also the carbine and last models of the 788 had a straight comb versus the monte carlo comb of earlier rifles.

I have two of the 788s, one is a 6mm that I bought in '76 and a 22-250 that I bought last year. I will never sell either as I love both of them, both are more accurate than I can shoot them. I feel they are an excellent rifle but the prices are getting high on them now.
