8x58 Sauer
« on: April 25, 2012, 02:51:19 AM »
Anybody here shoot or load a 8x58r Sauer? Am considering a 16 ga.drilling with that rifle caliber. The maker is Barletta (or similar name) in Berlin.

The 8x58R Sauer ctg. is hard to find, although it was a fairly popular combination target and hunting cartridge in the early 20th century.  You would have to make cases from 9.3x72R cases.  They are available but pricey and would require forming dies in 8x58, which are also available but only on a special order basis.  And you might have to use Berdan primers unless you could find Boxer primed cases.

The cartridge is similar in power and uses to the old .32-40 Winchester and Ballard; basically a decent deer cartridge at the usual ranges we see in the East and coastal NW.  You might have to slug the bore to find out if it took the .318 8mm "J" bullets or the .323 "S" bullets, although if the usual Germanic thoroughness were followed by the maker, that info would be stamped on the flats of the barrel where they mate with the "water table" of the receiver.  You need to remove the barrels to see this.

If the maker was H. Barella, it is a good quality drilling.

Thanks guys,
Mike, the maker was Barella-K.K. Hofbuechsenmacher/Berlin, glad you got me back on the right track.
Doug, the cartridge information is for the 8x58 R Danish military which is not the same as the Sauer. According to  Barnes Cart. of the World, .303 Savage cases match rim and base measurements but would be slightly shorter.

Ron Reed is selling 8x58R Sauer ammo http://shop.reedsammo.com/product.sc?productId=1559&categoryId=108

I have purchased ammo from Ron and he is a great guy and he is also a sponsor of GrayBeardOutdoors.

Just noticed this.  The two 8x58s are NOT the same.

I have a cape gun in the Sauer round which is based on the 9.3x58r360.  You can make brass from 9.3x72r and run it into the sizer.  You are looking at a 200gr slug at around 1800fps.

Yes, as stated above, just like the 32-40

So I bought the gun. It is 20x20 and 8x58r with a Voigtlaender Skoparette 4X  with a slide on side mount. A 1925 period piece.Talked to Reed's Ammo but the head dimension of his case was bigger than my chamber measured. Will try to use 9.3x72r brass when I get some dies.

Hey Bauer

The 20 ga are rare, sounds like a great find.  Are you planning to post pictures?
