Got a new bug...
« on: April 18, 2012, 03:19:06 PM »
I have been thinking and we have been hunting a piece of ground that is insanly thick with brush. I am tore between the 44 mag. 30-30 and 35 rem. i am also torn between the Winchester, Mossburg, and Marlin. I am not really worried about looks because the gun is a tool and it is going to be used a lot. So what is your guys thoughts.

I have had Winchesters and Marlins, still have the Marlins. I like the 44 Mag for close in brushy areas.

It don't really matter as far as "gettin it done" either will do the job. I had a ruger 44 carbine, great little rifle, still have a 30-30 and a 35, both are great but I like the 35 best, with 180FP, deer usually go right down. JMO

Howdy,
Some years ago Mike Venturino tested various "brush" cartridges by shooting at a target through rows of 1/4" dowels. The theory is that a big heavy .45-70 will plough through the stuff and hit the target. It didn't work that way. It turned out that everything he tried was deflected by the sticks.
Your best bet would be a short carbine that shoulders quickly and won't hit anything as you try to bring the front sight to the target. All the cartridges you mention are perfect for the job.

Bitteroot,
I remember this article well.  He used hundreds of dowels of various thicknesses, set up in dozens of arrays, and shot through them with all of the so-called brush busters.  Each and every one of them significantly deflected after hitting a 1/4 inch dowel, even the .45-70.
The concept of busting through brush with your bullet is a total myth.
  Ethan,
You are wasting your time trying to pick between these 3 calibers if your shots will be at 50 yards or less.  All three of them are stone cold deer killers at the range.
So, devote your time instead to finding a rifle you can afford that feels absolutely perfect, and don't worry about which of the calibers it is in.  The only caveat to this is that the .35 Remington is fairly expensive, and sometimes difficult to find.
Probably the cheapest way to go would be to look for a used Marlin 336 Spikehorn, in .30-30, with the stained hardwood stocks, not the real walnut ones.  (These are only $400 new, so you can probably find one for $350 or so.)
The Marlin 1894 carbine in .44 mag would also be great, but these are pretty expensive, even used.
  Hope this helps.

I am too old and fat & bad knees .  So I am not a hunter .

     But , if I were , I would consider one of my .45-70 Marlins .  Or my 20" barrel Winny M 1897 12 guage with a slug or 00 buckshot ?

God bless
