Four bronze guns at Fort Belvoir, Fairfax County, VA
« on: April 10, 2012, 12:21:59 AM »
The two "Dutch East India Company" cannons have a fascinating shared history. The Spanish guns are given short shrift in the article, but the photos show a beauty.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

Thanks for posting.  The new Army Museum at Ft. Belvoir is the eventual destination for the many deteriorating bronze trophy cannon at nearby Ft. McNair, according to my Army Museums contact.  While the present conservation was do doubt undertaken by the Base Commander at Belvoir, not within the museum system, the museum folks aren't far away and will get to see the results.  We've heard that the Army plans to put the bronze cannons from Ft. McNair under cover, which will of course stop the acid-rain corrosion that's been eatng them up as they sit exposed outdoors.

And of course, they will be much farther from the population center that is creating the acid rain.

I wonder what they did to the bore before sealing the muzzle.

Flagman1776,
The bore would have been cleaned and treated just like the outside surface of the barrel, and then sealed with the same microcrystalline wax.

I tried stopping by there about a year ago, but couldn't get on post as I had a rifle in the trunk and was headed to a ASSRA match.

Thanks, for posting the pix!

CW,
Well, you did have a rifle that acted more like an IED than a rifle, so maybe U.S. intelligence is keeping an eye on you.

Hmmm.  I DO shoot single shot matches with .458 Win Mag and .405 Winchester (soon to add the .375 Ouch and Ouch).
But on the flip side, I'm now officially OLD (although still in denial) as I signed up for Medicare today with the Social Security.  And I DO shoot skeet with my 10ga Double.  I would hope my aim is better than an IED.

But US Intel watching me?  I haven't had an active T.S. crypto clearance for many decades, and the parties I attend are far too tame ....

I'd call it 99.99% !

There are two places, one on each  hand that tingle like crazy when touched!

A pleasant reminder.

Thanks!

Two years after trying to cut off the end of one of my fingers with a tree pruner, the nerve finally healed completely; only the scar remains to remind me of my carelessness.  On the other hand, this happened when I was in my twenties so it may not be completely relevant here.

Near perfect is pretty darn good. Nerve damage is an odd thing: I had surgery on a ripped finger tendon many years ago, and I still sometimes get strange sensations there (luckily, it's not my trigger finger).
