must've gotten lucky
« on: April 05, 2012, 02:52:53 AM »
My first Handi was purchased a couple of months ago in 44 mag. On the 1st trip  to the range I loaded up some 240gr XTP's w/2400. My first attempt to zero made my heart sink as my 25yd target looked like a load of 00 buck. I had also drug my Dan Wesson 744VH8 along because it never fails to put a smile on my face. I switched over to the DW loads which are 180gr XTP's over W296 and it started one holeing @ 25yds! I moved on out to 50yds and got 2" 5 shot groups consistantly. Now mind you I have never fired a Handi and this rifle was otb except for a Simmons 3-9 Whitetail Classic. After joining this site and reading the faq's I realize there is much room for improvement in my bench manners. I'm not complaining yet. After a little education on shooting technique I'm looking forward to trying a few tried and true pointers. I went to the local gs last Sat and walked out with a new BC. It's marked Wesson and Harrington and came with no sights but was new and @ $300 tax free I figured I'd pop for it. I thank the people on this site that have done all the homework for me. I started shooting/hunting in the late 60's with an H&R 20ga. single and find it odd that after all these years and $$$$spent on guns I am coming full circle. I hope I don't get crazy with this project 'cause I only wanted to put together a small collection of Handis and barrels. Time will tell, thanks for a great place to get my Handi fix.

Congrats on the two new rifles.  A word of caution though, the Wesson and Harrington is not on a high pressure frame, so keep your loads mild.  It's not a SB2 Handi Rifle.  My experience with the .44 is that it shoots best with hot loads.  Good luck,

Pete

I was not aware of the frame issue, thanks for that info. I wonder if H&R will install a BC 45 Colt barrel? I planned on using the BC for mild loads due to an AC separation I neglected surgery on. Oh well I will learn the Handi Rifle as I go.  Thanks again, Buddy.

Congrats hitman!  ;)

Pete, the Wesson and Harrington BC and Targets were made in the late 90s, early 2ks, on SB2 frames, unfortunately Ilion won't fit barrels to them last I read likely because they have no records on when they were made due to the proprietary "WH" serial number.  :-\

Also, last I heard there were no 45LC barrels available through the BAP. :(

Thanks, Dinny

+1 on the W&H SB2 Frame with the BC 32".  I have several hundred rounds out of my W&H BC in 45-120 with jacketed & cast and no problems other than an occassional bloody forehead or bruised shoulder. :P

Thanks for the correction Tim.  Where'd I pick up that missinformation?

I was just talking to Jason F on the fone and he advised me also that it is in fact an sb2 frame. When i tried some researching I ran across this post I had forgotten about. Just to update this issue I did my first rebarrel job on this gun. I had to file fit it and Jason coached me via land line. It turned out perfect, Since then I found a new 22 Hornet sb2. Jason was looking for a Hornet barrel so I purchased it and traded him for a 30-30 barrel. It was of course too loose so Jason again coached me while I fitted it. Everything so far has worked out perfectly and I'd like to thank all you guys for the help and advice. Especially Jason, he is one heck of a good Handi man. Pun inteded.
