"If I;m in Texas at the time, the Sheriff will just say 'They should'a known better'.  But if I'm in Michigan when this should happen, you have to consider how you will look at the inquest."

When I was stationed at NAS Cecil Field outside of Jacksonville, FL.  There was a prison break at Raiford.  A deputy came by the house and told us to lock the vehicles and house and to stay inside because they were in our area.  I asked if we could shoot if they came.  The deputy replied "Yeah, sure.  Just drag them inside".  I had to leave for the base and told my wife if trouble came not to open the doors or windows but use the .30-30 336 and shoot through them.  They were captured before they got to us.

I agree but I think a bigger bullet would be easeir to grab and reload with a larger hole in the back end of the chamber.
and a 30-30 or 308  or even a 45-70.  I think would load faster and there are shell holders for the larger rounds.  So far I have been looking for a belt slide to hold 223 for my Single shot and top load bolt gun.

For the ones that keep your guns loaded, what if a burgular is in your home when you arrive .  He has your arsenal at his exposure loaded and ready to use against you. I've. Heard horror stories of this happening over the years. One of those lock boxes that read fingerprints would be better. Justin's something to think about.

I agree with my esteemed colleagues, Doc and Pete.Handi's are for hunting Quality reliable semiauto rifles & pistols and pump shotguns are for detfense situations
The only single shot I have any faith in for defense is a claymore (and i ain't talking about the sword)

Unfortunately, there are instances described in the linked FBI pdf(pix not for tender eyes) where they just ain't gonna die. BTW. The guy did not have any drugs(trace of weed but no stimulants) or alcohol on board at the time.  ???

I went to 100% shotguns for home defense because of several reports like this.
I upgraded from a Kahr single stack to a G26 (double stack) due to Flash Mob Robberies.

If you got multiple assailants, you don't have much going on the good luck side. True, that a single shot forces concentration to get that one perfect shot while hunting or target shooting, but you're not going to have that luxury of time when the door gets kicked in and your house turns into a non square two way range.

A SHTF can be bunch of different things.  Home invasion, government collapse, LOL zombie apocolypse- ::) . Home invasion- usually the middle of the night, you are being woke up, and the adreneline is pumping.  Might miss on the first round from being jumpy.  Government collapse- looters and roving gangs will more than likely be involved and they will probably be armed.  So, multiple (armed) targets will be involved.  Zombie Apocolypse- well, we have all seen the movies.  LOL.

I would opt for a good pump shotgun, pistol, scoped bolt action rifle, and/or an AR platform of some sort is any of these situation ove a single shot platform.  Like what was said before though, a single shot is better than no shot at all.
It's all a hot mess...........

I agree with the keep it simple plan, for some(maybe most) people. When I'm asked by a nonshooter what's best I suggest a DA .38 revolver, single shot shotgun, or a Glock if they're really going to practice. It's hard to remember a lot of stuff when you're freaked out and scared.

I need to comment to beaverslayer.  90% of my guns at loaded in my house.  And UNloaded gun is no better than a rock.  If they are already in my home when I get there, I will go to my concealed carry handgun that rides on my hip 24/7.  44 Man

Marlin 1894, 357 mag, with 140 grain XTPs (10 rounds in the tube)
Beretta CX4 Storm .45 ACP (2- 8 round mags on butt stock mag holders = 16 rounds.)

But its what I have. If all I had was MY .223 Handi, Thats what i'd use.

Besides, Really, (j4l, not withstanding) How likely are "Most" of us gunna be in that type of situation ? Probably never. So I think its ok.....NOT PERFECT, But ok. JMHO.

Reasons why I think a Handi would work for ME .

One - Of the long guns that I have , 80% are Handi's
Two - They are the rifle that I have with me 95% of the time .
Three - I can take apart and put together with my eyes closed .
Four - I have spent enough time with MINE that I can get off 3 rounds faster than most can with a bolt gun .

I'm come-fee with my Handi's and if it hits the fan , they WILL be my go-to guns , but thats just me !  ;)

I used a 223 and wax bullets on a cardboard bad guy.....years back.. I gave myself a count of 1001- --- be back into cover inside of one or two second -----not EZ at 15 or more feet....you could use zombie targets --- since the Zombie Apocalypse IS COMING SOON!!!!

I was once in the shower and looked out the window to see a guy in the back yard! I jumped out and grabbed what was "handi" -- a Youth 20ga. Pardner, and three shells of buckshot (two in fingers of left hand, shell in chamber, hammer back, gun open).

I watched furtively and quickly found he was real interested in the telephone equipment on the other side of the back fence and was not even looking at the house. Good thing, or he'd have seen a naked guy running through the house with nuttin' but a shotgun and soap suds.  :o

I threw some clothes on, dropped a pistol in my pocket and went out front to talk to the guy ... now in his work truck. He was a 'phone co. employee and hadn't realized anyone was home. He claimed he rang the bell, but I think he just made an assumption on a weekday afternoon.

Did I want more gun? A Garand or a pump shotgun would have been better. Did I feel unarmed? Far from it.

Anyone considering this should start by viewing Clint Smith's demonstration on YouTube. Most of us can't run a s/s that fast. I'll stick with a pump shotgun.

All my best,
Dirty Clean Bob

one shot , then it becomes a war club. Like in the Last of the Mohicans.

But if you aren't fighting Mohicans, I can think of far better choices.

Next to my bed stand are an FN-FAL with five mags of 130gr mk319, a 19 inch rifle sighted High Standard pump with 5 brennake slugs and a Glock 34 with two mags of 124gr HP. I hunt with traditional muzzleloaders and old style breech loaders but if ever a two legged thread appears, I will care naught about sport. It's all about delivering the maximum weight of fire upon the threat in the least amount of time.

I forgot to add; what ever gun you have at hand when the poo hits the fan is the one you will have to fight with. Best to be proficiant in its deployment.
