ruger 44 carbine
« on: January 27, 2004, 06:33:28 AM »
I have a ruger 44 carbine was my first deer rifle and had it reblued several years ago. Since then the first shot goes off ok but It won't cycle and auto load the 2nd shell.
Is their something I can do myself to get this working or am I going to have to take this in to a gunsmith ???

If it was there after the return from the blue job, I'd guess there's crud in the gas system.  Perhaps even a bit of after rust.  As to what to do, are you comfortable detail stripping the weapon?  That's what needs done.  Strip and clean..and check to be certain it's correctly reassembled.  There are also pins in this particular weapon that sometimes work loose.  Some of these will tie up the weapon, others just create drag which can cause function problems.  When you say it won't feed the second round..What is going on.  Does the fired round eject?  Is the second round jammed in the action or does it not even release from the magazine?  Give us a few more details..  These are for the most part fairly simple and robust rifles.

The 1st round stays in the chamber, I can load the magazine full but have to manually chamber the second or third round etc., seems like gas chamber must be plugged up or something.
As far as completely stripping, I don't know I bought one of those manuals with break downs & exploited views but, this book makes this gun look real complex & for "fear" of not being able to get it back together correctly I may have to decide to take this to a good gunsmith as the one that did the bluing has since past on.

If the rifle will extract the empty round when cycled manually then indeed the rifle has a gas systems fault..  It's hard to say what it might be but Ruger had a lot of problems with this rifle if they were used with lead bullets.  Seems the gas systems was prone to clogging.  I believe I would take it to a good smith and let him work it out..  Good luck !!  Jerry

Thanks for the info Jerry you pretty well confirmed what I already thought, hard to find a good gunsmith that knows these guns.
I guess I'll probably try Williams Gun Site as they are about an hour away.
