« on: January 27, 2004, 06:31:21 AM »
I have been looking at these two calibers.I want a gun that will be good for coyote and deer. The .25 WSSM is a bigger caliber but either would do. If anyone has any information on the .25 WSSM please share it.

forum052001,

The .25 WSSM is Winchester's new offering in the WSSM line up.  It is supposed to be very near to the .25-06(which is a great combination varmint/deer cartridge) without using as much powder.  I have one ordered but they won't be available until after the S.H.O.T. Show when Winchester is going to have it's grand un-veiling, most likely some time in June at the earliest.  For ballistic data got to www.rifleshootermag.com/wssm25_1119 and you can see the early load data.  So far I like what I see but wish Winchester had brought out the .257 WSM instead.  Lawdog

The .22 caliber is better coyotes, while the .25 is better for deer.  When using one gun for both hunts, I generally err on the side of bigger diameter.  In this case, I wouldn't want to use a .22 caliber on deer, so I advise using the .25 caliber.

Any particular reason why you are set on the .25 WSSM?  You can get the regular .25-06 available in many more makes and models, not to mention factory loads.  Now, if the .25 WSSM was in a .25 WSM make, meaning velocity higher than .25-06, and just a bit lower than .257 Weatherby velocity, then I would opt for the .25 WSM.  However, Winchester made it only in a WSSM form and, as such, I would stick with a .25-06.
