45/410 Survivor Load Question
« on: March 20, 2012, 09:40:39 AM »
It's my understanding that in the 45/410 Survivor, the 45 LC accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. Pretty long jump for that bullet to get to the rifling. If someone were to load down some 460 S&W Mag brass to where about a 255 gr bullet were running around 1000-1200 fps or so, because of the bullet being closer to the rifling would accuracy improve ?

I would think so,but .............. not every time you get the bullet closer to rifling does accuracy improve. But worth a try !

lets make it real simply known ok...... what your talking  about could easily be mis-interperated by folks that are not well gifted in the handi world.
you are takeing a barrel that CANNOT HANDLE MORE THAN 14.4K PRESSURES !!!
and firing a .460 round in it.  sure, you said reduced.....with many different powders
and bullets them speeds COULD produce over max pressures of the barrel.
but some might not understand WHY !!!  please make some sort of disclaimer to the audience we have here. it would be devastating to know someone lost a hand or eye
trying that without knowing anything about such a combination.

Reduced as in published loads with Trailboss or Titegroup. I truly hope no one would put a full power 460 mag in a 45/410 survivor.

+1 GENDOC,

SAAMI Max. Ave. for 410 2.5", 12,500 PSI, 410 3", 13,500.  45/410 barrel is a shotgun steel barrel.  45LC is 14.4K as Doc said.
Published data, by Hodgdon, for Trail Boss in the 460 S&W Mag has pressures (PSI) from 16,500 to 24,200 PSI. :o   Hodgdon has also published data for Trail Boss in rifle cartridges with pressures well in excess of 40K PSI.  Trail Boss is a low velocity/low recoil powder, it seems to be given credit for being a low pressure powder but the manufacturer's data doesn't support this.

Thought/question for the folks that know more than I do (aka, everybody else). To achieve the OP's purpose, longer OAL with .452, what about a low pressure 45 Colt load with a wad as spacer in the 460? Using say, 410 nitro card and fiber wad (so no real pressure seal) to keep the powder in 45 Colt column. Would the effect of the nitro card and fiber wad (without seal) serve to raise pressures way above base low pressure load levels? Could it work? ???

What it looks like, from folks that know more than I do about the 45/410 Survivor model, is that if you shoot anything other than a 410 shotgun shell or a 45 Colt loaded at factory levels, you stand a chance of blowing up the gun and injuring yourself. I appreciate all the info that was put on this post and will just shy away from experimenting with this gun.

kynardsj--on another list a guy used 9.3x74R brass to eliminate that jump--this was in a Contender-- with a NEF the same should be possible--woodsrunner

Be careful because there is a thread on another forum of a guy who FF the 9.3x74R brass in a 45/410 contender and posted his load data with Lil Gun powder.  It is an extremely large charge of this pistol powder and in my mind could is be a pipe bomb.

Here is my experience with fireforming 9.3x74R brass:
http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,223383.0.html  check on page 2 of the thread, posts #34 and 35 by me for the meat of the info.  The beginning is my information gathering phase.

I use these shells exclusively now with this barrel, even for shot loads.
