got new .308 to range
« on: March 16, 2012, 03:10:11 PM »
Took the new .308 Dicks special to the range for a short try  This is a 22 inch bull barrel, camo stock with no nome 4-12..  The 4-12 scope has short eye relief, wants to vignette even on 4.  I almost blacked an eye first shot).  It does seem clear, and adjusted well and didn't seem to settle in after the first shot after adjusting.  As usual, the rail screws were loose from the factory.

The plastic foreend fit slightly odd.  I found the lug on the barrel had been dinged probably during assembly.  I was a little dissappointed with that quality.  I am afraid to try bending it too much, don't know if it is welded or soldered.  I fiddled with it at work, retapped it and reamed the hole in the forrend a bit to get it to assemble right.  A wood forend from another gun will not fit right either.  I don't want to try sending it back to be repaired.  I may find a new lug and carefully weld it in correctly, (or LEAVE  IT ALONE).

I can live with the extractor, first one for me.

I was surprised by the light recail (150 gr factory).  It didn't seem much more than the .243.  I can compare it to a Win 30-30, Savage 99 in .300(closest to same), 30-06 bolt, and .303 Enfield, all of which kick harder.  Must be the "give" in  the plastic stock.

Now for a shotgun scope in 1 - 4 or thereabouts, dies, and more brass.  This thing really fits as a "one gun".  And I can always rob the arsenals for 7.62 mil stuff if I cant find anything else.

Did it hit what you pointed it at?

Added: Sorry after rereading it I guess not with a loose rail and the other problems.
At least you got to the range with a gun. Still a better day than working ;D

I have one but haven't shot it yet, may be a while, glad to hear they don't kick ;)

I dunno, I think I would call the factory and then send it back.  That way you won't have to worry about it not being true.  Or give it a whack in the correct spot to get the lug right - if it breaks off you can send the whole shooting match back to H&R.

I wouldn't try to fudge it.  PM Brian, he'll want it back and do it right.  You may never be able to get it to shoot properly the way it is.

I was on the pistol range, so shot at 35 or 40 yards, made a 1/2 inch group.  I tightened the screws before I went, long ago I learned about inspecting things like that.

I will try Brian, the hardest thing about fixing it myself is finding a way to fixture the part.  We don't want to wear him out.  Right now it is close enough to asssemble.  I may make a washer to put under the screw on the forend; the plastic is softer than wood.
