500 S&W compensator
« on: March 12, 2012, 10:41:37 AM »
I have a  6 1/2'' preformance center 500 S&W. The question I have is can I shoot without the compensator? I am shooting 440 cast bullets and every once in awhile I have pieces of lead or powder hit my face. I can't see any leading. I can't get the compensator off either. I bought this gun used and it hasn't been shot much. The compensator for lead is on the gun it came with two.  thanks Bill Fox

You can’t remove the comp, but you can neutralize it by sleeving it.

I have a 6 ½” 500 PC Hunter. It may be the same gun as yours. It has the cylindrical comp permanently attached to the muzzle. I measured mine and it measured 0.930” which is perfect for a sleeve of 1.0”x0.035” tubing. I got a couple of feet of stainless 1x.035” tubing, cut off about 1 ½” and slid it over the comp. I put a little Loctite on it to hold it in position. I have fired it and it certainly produces roll, but it isn’t spitting lead and unburned powder and it isn’t putting gas into the objective lens of my 2x Weaver scope. So far, so good.

I got my pistol back from S&W and they adjusted the cylinder gap and cut the forcing cone. I was surprised no more lead or powder hitting me in the face. They said the forcing cone was the problem. Bill

I have the 460 which is pretty much the same gun.  It came with two compensators, one for jacketed bullets, and one for lead bullets.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

If your .500 has the two removable comps, at least one guy had some solid replacement comps made that interchange with the removable comps.

This should be the guy.

There is a company who makes fillers(replaces) for the 500 compensators.
Or, you could buy one without a compensator like I did
