auction site headsup
« on: March 08, 2012, 06:54:12 AM »
Hi All,

There is a Handi in 223 with a shorty, homemade fluted barrel for sale on gunbroker.  I am 99.9% the receiver is an SB1.   Might want to look at it for the alternative sling swivel installation. ::)

Looks like an SB1 receiver to me as well. That is a potential bomb waiting to injure or kill someone!!!....<><....:)

The seller has been notified by me about the possible problem he may have.
Below is the message I sent him.

Sir: You may want to halt this auction until you determin which series of receiver this is. Being color case with a shotgun style butt stock I am almost certian that this is an SB1 receiver made only for shotguns. If so it will have the large firing pin and the weaker receiver and is not safe to shoot high power cartridges from. Not trying to stop your sale, I just don't want anyone to get hurt nor do I want to see you open yourself to any possible legal action should something happen. Please, take the time to make sure which action it is, SB1 (shotgun frame) or SB2 (Rifle frame). Thank you for your time.

Hope he is right or at least takes my advice.

I emailed and asked him about that myself, so far I haven't got an answer.

I just got off Gunbroker as well after sending him a plain spoken message that that item he is selling is dangerous. I hope he pulls it for sale as a complete rifle....<><....:)

Wow is right! Not only does it appear to be a SB1, but that fluting comes back farther than I am comfortable with and it appears to be cut quite deep.

Thanks, Dinny

The only thing I'm wondering about is the fact that the barrel says "Pardner Handi-Rifle"...making me think that maybe it was part of an old  set included with a shotgun barrel?  just a thought
12g shortie w/chokes,Tamer .410,12g "Buck" slug gun w/20g extra barrel, 12g smooth bore tracker I, 45/410 w/22vp matched set, 7mm-08, .308 20",

my avatar pic is my 1960 Rambler I bought in 1972 for $175..6 banger 3-on-the-tree...drove it for 5 yrs  22mpg.. was "hot-rodding" (LOL) one night...tore out 1st/reverse gear. Drove it that way for 2 yrs(with no reverse and only 2nd and high)  Had to really plan ahead when parking.
sold it for $125

Yup, I remember that one, I hope the buyer (can't remember who it was) made out okay in the end.

Wow garbhead! Good eyes, only way to find out is to have the seller call H&R with the serial number or to take the stock off.

Here's another auction item that is misrepresented, and potentially dangerous.  Seller claims "This action came from a 45 caliber muzzleloader but can be used for modern long gun, which is why this requires a FFL for shipment."

It just goes to show that you have to know what your buying, or your going to get beat.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

It looks way to good for their work, but it is a close copy. If it had trade mark vice marks on the barrel and looked like a blunder buss from the pipe cutter used to bob the barrel then it would be their work. (The Max barrel looks and shoots great after some time in the lathe and a new bluing job. But I may have destroyed any value it had as a Marynred Profine custom barrel)
