.44 mag
« on: March 05, 2012, 11:15:36 AM »
Has any one slugged a new .44 mag barrel recently to see what diameter they're shipping at these days.  I'm thinking of sending one of my frames in for a Hornet barrel and I figured if I can't get a tighter (than the .433" one I have,)   I'd go for a new .44 mag barrel too...

Tony,

I just picked up a new manufacture 44 Mag barrel, 20" compact.  Not sure of the build date because I only bought the barrel but it is new enough to have an extractor not an ejector.  As soon as I get my dies I will load some .430" cast and see if it will shoot straight or not.  I will try and remember to slug it one day.

My .44 shoots jacketed bullets OK but I'd like to shoot more cast bullets and with a .433 bore, my choices are very limited.   Maybe I should get a .444 Marlin barrel instead...

Tony,

I have bought 4 of the Illion, NY 444M barrels in the last 18 months.  All will shoot 1.0 to 1.5 MOA @ 100 yards with .430" gas checked lead.   Bullets weights from 270 to 310 grains and velocity from 1500 to 1850 fps.    Buy a can of trail boss and a 444M becomes a 44 Mag;  ??? ???  wait why didn't I think of that before I bought the 44 Mag barrel. :P   I slugged one of the Illion NY 444M barrels at .4295".

I'm still trying to get my older (overbore) to act right.  My next attempt will be to get some .433 cast with gasck and see if that will make it behave.  If I could get it half as accurate as my .30-30 I would be a happy camper during our "Primitive" hunting season.

I've got an older one.  I get .433 cast GCs from Montana Bullet Co.  They shoot great in both mag. and super mag.

I'll have to try some of those.  Up until now, I've only been able to find .430 cast bullets.  My .44 shoots .433 cast round balls from a Lee mold pretty good in cat sneeze loads but I want more options...  8)

I have tried just about everything with my 44 mag.   I have fussed about it on this site before, am on the 4th barrel trying to get one that will shoot.  I guess I will keep this one because I am tired of sending them back.  I can get 1 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards out of this one, either with 240 grain jackets or with 240 Oregon Laser Cast.   I get this with 12.5 18.5 grains 2400.  I have tried several powders and numerous factory loads.  One of these days I will try a heavier cast bullet and see what I can get out of it.  Right now I will have to live with it like it is.  Tired of messing with it.

I bought this thing for hunting the thickets during primitive weapon season.  A hundred yard shot would be rare.  If I can get 3" at 100 yards it will be good enough, not that I would not like it to group at half that size.

I was hoping it would shoot like my 45-70 Handi.  It shoots three shot groups at 50 yards that I can cover with a nickel.

Big TYPO above. That is 18.5 grains of Alliant 2400, not 12.5.

I've got some 240 grain .433 gas checks on order from Montana now or at least ready to mail.  He doesn't take credit cards.  If I can get that thing within 2 or even 3 inches at 100 I think I would be happy.  What are you getting with them anyway?

Tony,

I haven't slugged my extractor Illion NY compact 20" 44 Mag barrel yet but I think based on this target this barrel may be happy with 0.430" gas checked lead. (crappy pic, 3 shot 1 1/6" @ 100 yards) I just started on load development so I am hoping that will a little effort I can get this gun to shot right. ;)

Edited - powder charge data deleted
