PatternMaster chokes
« on: February 27, 2012, 10:47:20 AM »
Any body have any experience in using these chokes in varmint hunting? Especially for coyotes!
I know Les Johnson in the TV series PredatorQuest using them, but have any of you tried or used them on your 12 gauge? If so thoughts on maxium effective  range say with #4 Buck or #1 Buck??

I had one and was very impressed with it.   Using lead 2s and BBs along with #4 buck it was the tightest patterns I have ever tried.   Combined with some dead coyote ammo I made a couple of very long shots on coyotes and both were bang flops.   Using the #4 buck and dead coyote shot I would comfortably shoot out to 50+ yards on coyotes and fox.

Thanks TheBear_78!
What model Shotgun and brand of shells were you using in the #2, and #4 Buckshot?
Also were you using the longrange or extended range choke? Were these 2 3/4", 3", or 3.5" shells?

I use the LR version on my waterfowl gun.  Very good with bb and #2.  I have taken cripples at 55+ yards.  Little tight for my prefered feet down in your face shots, but apples and oranges.  Back on topic.  Try one, every gun is differant and if it hates it you can get almost full value on a waterfowl site

I have used it on Remington 870 both a 3" and 3.5" version.   The 3" remington #4 buck worked very well along with some old nitro lead 2s.  I have some older lead BBs that I picked up at a garage sale that also work really good on fox and cats.   I have used ti for predator calling when I have a buddy with me manning a rifle and the lead 2s and BBs have proven very effective on predators out to 40-50 yards.

On my 3.5" 870 with 3.5" dead coyote shot I shot two coyotes over 55 paces.   Both were one shot stops but I hit the one twice cause it was still kicking.

I made the mistake of picking up a live coyote by the hind legs one time and don't plan on doing it again! :o

I have used the shotguns when running predators with dogs more than I have for predator calling.   I've found #4 buck to be effective even out to 60-70 yards.  Usually you poke a couple holes thru them they get a lot easier for the dogs to catch and since they are almost always running flat out when we run them with dogs its easier to hit them with the scattergun.

Thanks for the reply TheBear_78!
What type of dogs do you use?
I live in Colorado and up just north of me in Wyoming they use greyhounds to hunt coyotes!
Also was thinking about putting a fiber optic front sight on the barrel, is that what you use or do you just use the regular old bead sight?

I have a fiber optic on one of the shotguns and a meprolight tritium bead on the other.   They actually work about the same.    We mostly ran walkers and a  few black and tans on predators.   My dad had an old buddy who shared close to 30 hounds between him and his brothers.  It was a heck of a lot of fun when I was growing up.  They always needed young legs to walk down the tracks as they never released the dogs until the animal was seen.

Yeah!
When I was growing up , some of my uncles had coon dogs and squirrel dogs!  Those coon hounds were mainly Redbones, Blueticks, and other hounds of mixed anscestory!
Back in my really, really young days one of my grandpa`s always had 30-32 fox hounds!!
How long have you been in Alaska?
My oldest son lives there and I go up sometimes to hunt and fish with him.
He really worked the ducks over this year and he is also going to order a PatternMaster for his Winchester.
I ordered my long range PatternMaster today to go on my Mossberg which I will be putting a fiber optic front sight. Then I will be ordering another PatternMaster for my Rem Mod 870!

I've been up here for 10-11 years now.   I don't get out to do much duck hunting but I have swatted a few while bear hunting and fishing/shrimping.   Those sea ducks are amazing.  Good luck to you guys.
