Serious lead fouled barrel
« on: January 23, 2004, 06:20:31 PM »
I have a 12 gauge barrel that has fired approx 3 boxes of Foster slugs. I am not able to remove all the lead. I tried all bore/lead cleaners, and even polish. I use muriatic acid on engine cylinder walls to remove excess aluminum, is that an option for removing lead?

NO!!!!  Use a rod with an attached brush, a worn out one works best, wrapped with 0000 steel fur.  Wrap large enough that it's a bit hard to get in the bore and so that it won't unwrap from the drill's rotation.  Turn the rod with an electric drill, running the bob slowly until inside the bore.  I usually start at the chamber end if possible.  Run it dry initially and finish with a bit of cutting oil.  Move the spinning bob up and down the length of the bore, paying a bit of special attention to the chokes(if fixed) and the forcing cones.  Remove the bob and wipe out with a clean partch.  The steel fur will not scratch the bore and in fact will burnish the steel of the bore to a high polish..  In really bad bores I have used 00 to start but 0000 has almost always done a bangup job and it safe too.  Be a bit careful though as the barrel can get quite hot, especially when being run dry.  Also removing the bob will still spinning full speed will make a severe mess!!

I left out the fact that it's a rifled barrel, sorry. I feel like an absolute idiot for shooting exposed lead slugs.

Absolutely!  The steel fur will bring the bore to high polish.  The rifling in a shotgun bore will not be harmed... but I would advise 0000 to start..
