.22 revolver only shoots in s/a sometimes?? Help!!
« on: January 23, 2004, 03:34:58 PM »
My grand dad gave me an old high standard .22 double nine.  I realize that this is not the nicest gun but that does not matter to me.  It came from him so it is not like I will ever sell it or any thing any way.
My question, the gun will always fire single action.  In double action it will fire if you aim the gun at the ground and then raise it up to shot, if not it will not draw the hammer back only spin the cylinder???  I am wondering if something is worn or loose or in need of replacing???   Can any one help me.
PS I have not had this gun apart,  I do not know any thing about it.  It shoots fine and I have cleaned it and oiled it.

Any help would be appreciated.

email jeepcj258@yahoo.com............I haven't had one of them apart in years but from other revolver work the hand spring and hammer block are not working and or broke.....these will block the hammer from getting a good hit on the shell in DA and in single action the hammer has more distance from the shell and hits harder......there are still parts available for them and a good gunsmith can fit them and make the gun work properly....they were pretty nice guns for the money and it is one of the few topbreak guns still being made and some people just love the 9 shots and ease of reloading the open gun........I would get a quote from a good smith and see if you want to repair it.......if the rest is in decent shape it should shoot fine.......hth..good luck and good shooting!!

I am also unfamiliar with the innards of your revolver.  But in the case of a Colt or S&W a broken or missing double action strut  spring might account for this.  When you point the revolver down the strut wauld fall forward to its proper position and allow the trigger to pick it up.  It sounds like the hand is OK if pulling the trigger revolves the cylinder.

Colt and S&W sold a few single action target revolvers built on the double action frame.  I have such a Colt.  Pulling the trigger rotates the cylinder as the hand is on the trigger and not on the hammer as in a true single action.  By eliminating the double action strut and changing the hammer you get a shorter hammer stroke and faster lock time which was the point of the exercise.

Alice Cooper, could you be thinking of a H&R 999?
