OK guys, What's next???
« on: February 24, 2012, 02:51:41 AM »
I've got a real Handiholic problem.  I now have three SB2 frames and three stock sets sitting collecting dust.  I have all the standard factory calibers I want, and want to do something different.  I'm not really enchanted with the AIs, because generally speaking another caliber will do the job as well if not better.  I've been thinking about things like .25-20, .32-40, .44-40, but not real ticked about getting into stubs due to the lack of a local gunsmith.  I am thinking about .30-40 and 7.62x54.  I'm also not interested in shoulder killers like the 120s and Nitros.  Suggestions please.  Anyone got one I can't live without?

Pete

How about the 358 Gremlin? Basically a necked up 7.62x39 necked up to use a 358 cal bullet.

See how it would stack up to the 357 max.

The 7.62x54R sounds real cool. Lots of cheap mil-surp and wolf brand ammo around to feed it.

The 7.62x54 sounds interesting not sure how the recoil would be, it seems the older I get the less I like it, although for some reason I make exception for the 444's and 454's. :o

Pete- The 30-40 has had Lucas' attention, but with no job or cash he just gets what he gets right now, if you do a 30-40 please keep us posted as to who did it and how it turns out. I do think he would like one, but it will be a while. Another round with some history. COOL.  thejanitor

I now have three SB2 frames and three stock sets

I feel your pain Pete!   :-\  Some time back I wrote that I had 3 receivers and nothing to put them on.  They are all now fitted to barrels and I got 2 new receivers with nothing to put with them!   ::)  And 4 extra stock sets with another on the way!   :o

It's all your fault...  >:(  you're the one who said to keep extra frames around just in case...  :(

Ya know, I been reading that thread about the .17 HH...  ;D

7.62x54 sounds like a goodin, anyone make reamers for them? Ya be using an .308 heavy barrell?

Edit: Cheaper just to buy a 7.62x54 rifle and ammo than it is to buy the reamer.

Just starting my work on a necked down 460 S&W to .358.
Wanting to run 180gr TTSX thru it.
Hoping for velocities in the 2800-3000fps.
Goal is for single pass case forming and use standard forming dies to do it.
Time will tell though.

Soon as I find a .38-55 barrel or a reasonably priced .375 blank, I'm gonna have a .38-72

I would suggest the .30-40 also.  Thought about the 7.62x54R too but don't know how scarce cases are for it.  You could also do 7.62 x 303 Brit (just made that up but I'm sure someone already has).  Squessing down those .303 from .311 to .308 shouldn't be that hard but then again that would be so close to .30-40 to even bother.

Could it handle the preasure of it?

Easily, it runs at less pressure than the 30-06 with the same size case head.

JES does 9.3 rebores.  ;)

Peter,
You DO have it bad... that 356 is still warm!!! (Like I should talk ::) I just ordered a 17 Hornet reamer this after noon. I haven't even shot mine yet!!  LOL)

Of your choices only the 30-40 makes sence to me. I would like one myself, even tho it will not do a thing my 307 cannot. ;)

How about the lil 17? I only hear you talk about bigger bores... First the 45-70, then the shortie 38-55 then the 357 Maxi and now the 356. Do you have any "small" bores?

The problem has been that there are no "small bores" available, that is the one reason that the 300 AAC might have been an answer for us. Now they might not be available to the general public if the AAC outlets get them all. I agree that the 218 Bee, 25/20 & 32/20 would have been my first choice family. Lets face it, the only guns I will shoot much now will be my 357 and my Hornet. The game available will be  squirrels, rabbits, and mostly pests- gophers, armadillos, starlings, ??? I could just take my 22LR, but that is a bit light, and I gave my 22 mag to the grandson.
If I don't connect with a 300, for what ever reason, the only project I have left in mind is a 357 barrel to ream to Herrett, just for old times sake when I used a contender a lot, and have 30/30 brass.

UNLESS, they come out with something SMALL........even a 6X47 might be worthwhile, but that is pushin it. :-\

I had a Sportster 17HMR Bull, and didn't like it.....not the bull barrel or the caliber.  I sold it and got Patty a Sportster 22 mag.  The smallest three I have now are a 10/22, my Handis in 223 and .32-20.

Ever since that fateful day years ago when I was running a pair of my beagles, I have been a big bore nut.  I was carrying a .54 T/C White Mountain Carbine with a PBR.  I had a red squirrel about 30 feet up a white pine sittin' on a broken branch stub with his tail over his back chattering at me.  I barked him through the bottom of the stub.  Yeah, sure, barked him....he came down in two pieces which the dogs had before they hit the ground.  I've always made it a practice to carry and hunt with all my guns large and small to stay tuned up with them.

I keep leaning toward the .44-40.  Why?  I guess it's like thejanitor said, another round with some history.  And, as CW said, the .30-40 is in the same slot with at least three of my other rifles.....Of course the .44-40 is too with others....
Man....This ain't easy.  Maybe I oughta go back to work to keep my mind occupied :o ??? ::) :(

Thanks to TopperT, I just finished putting together a nice 12 ga.  Oh yeah, the barrel was lost in the mail for over two weeks.  We'd both about given up on it.  He was up chasin' yotes in the Allagash and thought I had it.  He was shocked to find out it was missing.

You guys have come up with some good suggestions.......I wonder if I could get them all past Patty ::) ???   I could probably do it if I fixed up a pretty one for her once in a while.

Pete

How about a 22 Hornet, right between the 22 mag and the 223 in power. cheap to reload for, supplies are easily  available.A 16" shorty in a synthetic stock would be a dream to carry. It was developed in the 1920's so it is an old timer like us ;D
Plus all you need is to get a barrel and scope and you are ready to go.
Got to go I got a brand new barrel that is going into the lathe, I just talked myself into another shorty ;D

A30-40 sounds interesting.  I saw a 30-30 Topper converted a few years ago, should have bought it, even though it was loose.

For specials, how about .338-06, and .260 Rem. or 6.5 x 54.

Of the standards, you didn't list 35 Whelen, and you are missing out on a sweet shooter with the .243.
