Large frame Colt Lightning. That would be the deal.

The 870 would not do well at 45-70 pressures but a M1200-1300 might work. They use a rotating locking lug arrangement much like the m16. The firing pin should be made smaller and the tube mag would be tough to get function from, a detachable box would be much easier,,, still it should be doable.

I have persued dream rifles in the past, only to experience different dreams a year later.  Used to dream about Ackley Improved calibers, long barrels, high velocities, sub MOA groups, you get the idea.  Now I dream about short action calibers in lightweight rifles with 20" barrels that are easy to handle, light to carry, and are not a pain in the butt in an elevated box deer stand.  They kill whitetails just as well.  I had much different dreams in my youth than I do in my mid 60s.  Haven't dreamed about a magnum in 20 years.

... About 2 years ago I had a idea to build a 410 pump action with a fully rifled barrel for deer hunting here in Ohio, We cannot use any cartridge rifles here but a 410 is legal....    Jed

Jed,
To get around this same situation, a friend sent a Ruger #1 in 405 WCF out to be rechambered to the 410x 2 1/2 cartridge.  Using brass cases, he gets about 1900 fps with a 300 grain bullet.  Less than the origianl cartridge, more than enough for white tailed deer and legal in Ohio.

Certainly not my cup of tea, but I believe I remember seeing  760 carbines, 18 1/2 barrel, in 358 win, back in the late 60's in a couple of Western Auto stores here in Mo, about '67 I think. They were pretty nice brush guns I thought at the time, and a 358 is an excellent choice for such a weapon. I am a fan of the big Marlins, I admit. Never had a 45/70 in one, but did 444.

If I were going to have a "Dream rifle" I think it would have to be a Winchester low wall copy, Medium 20" hexagon barrel , in 256 Win. I know that is a bit odd, but I can see that with nice wood, and because of my eyes I would need a scope, so a compact fixed power Leupold, a 6X I would say. That would take care of just about everything but deer season where I have way too many already. I have enough straight linotype left to cast more of those little 65gr's than I could ever shoot, or use 75 gr V-max. ::)
