45/70 handi and 45/70 BC load?
« on: February 19, 2012, 09:37:01 PM »
I have had the BC for over a year now and have yet to shoot it and I just added the handi 45/70 barrel when I sent the 308 in for repairs.  My question is do they guys on here that have both find they need a whole different load for the Bc?  thanks again.

I have both, (actually two 22" and one 32") and they will all shoot my 15-1600 fps 4198 400 g load fairly well. BUT I like my light 5744 loads with a 405g lead slug in the 32" barrel... I don't hunt with that one and like the comfortable shooting lead load.

Try and see what yours likes, after all its up to the barrel not you or me! ;)

If your BC has the factory stock set and no recoil pad you will probably want a trapdoor level load unless you like a sore shoulder.  The curved steel buttplate with a heavy kicking load isn't much fun for most folks.

I love the 350 gr. Hornady FP over 48 gr. Reloader7 in my BC.  I use a small slip-on Limbsaver recoil pad to minimize the pain.  Without it I can only shoot like 3 before it starts being painful.  With it, I have done 65 in one day with minimal bruising.  hehe  I got good accuracy and a bit less kick from the 300 gr. HP and 325gr. FTX bullets, but they were too explosive for me for hunting.  The 350 FP will kill anything in North America, so I figure it's enough.  ;)
