Do they make a reamer for this?
« on: February 19, 2012, 11:15:24 AM »
Have a .30-30 Handi that I love.  I've thought about reaming to 30-40 Craig but thought I could find a round that would do without that trouble.  After working up several decent loads I decided to go with another more pointy bullet and settled on the Speer Hot-Cor 30 cal 150 grain.  Using Reloader 15 I found a promising load and set the bullet to the crimping grove.  It was a beautiful round but it would not chamber.  It was in the rifling.  I kept seating it deeper and deeper until the thing would chamber and the action close and it looked like I had pushed the poor thing almost all the way into the case.  I wanted that extra case capacity.

Do they make a reamer to just free-bore the thing a bit so I can seat the bullet at the crimping grove?  I checked with a local Smith and he said it would cost $90.  Any answers appreciated.

Yes, a throating reamer, I've done several of my Handis to load bullets longer, started with the 45-70, see Throating the 45-70 in the FAQs.

Would I need a T bar or just a 3/8 or 1/2 inch socket drive for that?  I would hate to have it here with the clock ticking and nothing to fit it.  I was a great price BTW.  Thanks Tim.

Depends on the reamer, I just used a standard tap handle, you could always call Fred at 4D and ask what ya need.  ;)

Thanks Tim.  I will call Fred (or whoever answers) and find out what I need before ordering.  Bought as a second rifle I've had it for four years and its accounted for several deer by me.  I know the factory may test fire barrels but since I've had it it's never fired a factory round.  Handloads just make hunting more personal.
