Thanks for all of the great advice.  All of this talk of re-working great older guns has given me another idea.  Let me know what you think.

Apparently, the Winchester 75s were great guns, with walnut stocks and adjustable triggers.  Among the best of the best.

The sporter models are extremely expensive, in the $1,000 and up range.  But, the target models are quite common and still pretty reasonable.  You can get one in really good shape as a shooter for around $450 if you do some looking.  Some of them are already grooved on the top of the receiver for installing clamp-on rings.  Of course, they come with a really long barrel, and a really heavy, wide, beavertail stock for shooting from a bench.

Why couldn't I just buy one of the target models, cut and crown that long barrel to 22 inches, and then put that stock on a belt sander to reshape the forward part of the stock down to a sporter configeration?   Assuming I do a good job with the stock, wouldn't I end up with a really first class shooter, for around $500?  Yes, it would be about $100 more than reconfiguring a Remington 511, but would probably be worth it.

  Manny

That's the fun in this!!  DO IT!!

The 75's where very nice as where a number of Winchesters like 69's and 52's, from these years! It will always have that feel, the rich history of a quality manufactured firearm that my Marlin stamped and cast Marlin will never poses..  ??? :-[

I have a old Marlin 37, a Winchester 69 and a Remington Targetmaster that have that feel that richness and patina as well. They shoot just fine and I enjoy them.

Build up that 75 and enjoy it!!

Personally i'd buy something closer to what i wanted in the first place.  Many of the target grade 22's have swaged bores, you start lobbing the bbls off, and you start looseing accuracy.

How accurate do you need it to be?  Rem. 541's, are more accurate than most of the 22's ever built and they already have nice trim stocks ect...  Rem. 581's are almost as accurate, are well built, and can be bought for around $200 bucks.  VERY hard to beat the 541's and 580 series Rem's when you are talking a nice trim 22 that REALLY shoots well.

There's even one model that is tube feed, and they shoot VERY well too, i picked up this 582 in like new condition with a nice scope for just under $200...  I really like tube feed 22's,

find a zastava 5 or the remington 5 that they imported from zastava. all steel and wood, very consistant accuracy with an adjustable trigger. nice rifles that are a copy of an older winchester action i read somewhere. plain 2 position safety on right side of action. about 250

The Zastava is the gun made in Serbia. The CZs are made in the Czech Republic, at least that is what it says on my three 452s and 527.

I think I'll just stick with a sporterized Winchester pre-A Model 52 from 1927 (lower rifle, below) for serious shooting.

Rangr44 Those are sweet.
I don't know why anyone would want one of the new 22s. I have a Remington 510 that I had since I was 9, it has always shot very well.
I have a Mossberg model 151m that I rescued from the parts bin that will out shoot almost any of them souped up 1022s
And I have Marlin 25n that I did a little custom work on it will hang with the best of the best. It routinely hits a 6" steel gong at 300yds.
I gave 10 bucks for the 510 43yrs ago I only have some labor and the price of a scope in the Mossy I gave  65 bucks for the Marlin $375 for the scope the trigger job cost me $1.89 everything else was made from bits and pieces laying around the shop.
I guess wanting one of them shiney new ones is like lusting after one of them Hollywood starlets they look good on your arm and get you noticed, but the girl next door has all the same equipment and will treat you better and hang with ya longer for a whole lot less money. ;D

Some independent thoughts here---your opinion may vary and be better than mine.
Bolt guns are good target/bench rest guns.
I like the beavertail forends, well, on all rifles.
The CZ--from all I read, which includes some reports from hi-end users of Coopers and Az's--is a very, very good rifle.
I love semi autos---luv em. funnest shooters in the world.
The T-Bolt seems to me to be the answer for bench rest and ease.
I will still do the .22 mag---in a pawn shop find if I can---you can do anything with shooters without messing them up. They are FUN project guns.
I agree with the thought about older rifles--but they are hard to find and your a lucky feller if you can get one.

I like old 22's too, i have an old/made in the 30's Savage 3D and several others too.  BUT, does that keep me from buying a new 22?  Heck NO, there's some nice newer 22-s being made today too.

I don't mind spending the money for an high end 22 either...  I bought this Anschutz not all that long ago,

Will it outshoot my old ones? Absolutely!  Is it better made? I think so!  Was it expensive?  Yes it was, but it's a proven design/rifle that will still be shooting REALLY good for generations to come!  It will be shooting fantastic and last me the rest of my life, and that makes it worth what i paid for it, to me.

My CZ 452 has been excellent the 10 years I have owned it, the best .22 I ever bought.  Another great gun I would like is the old Winchester 52, they stopped making it because of the cost.  But FN (parent company of Browning and Winchester) in South Carolina might get back on it if there were enough demand and the price was reasonable, they started making Winchester 70s again, so you never know? ;)

I have a CZ too! GREAT rifle!!  I bought the long barrel with the thought of adding a peep and what a shooter it was with the peep... then I wanted to see just how accurate it was and I added a Bushnell Trophy 6x18 AO scope... I had to use see thru rings to get it to clear the rear site... That was AFTER removing the blade!!!

mannyrock,

Check out what is available from the CMP (Civilain Marksmanship Program)

http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/22targetsurplus.htm

and

http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/22commercial.htm

Many decent rifles are available.

Now, I did not go that route but ended up with a Ruger 77/22.  It was good from the box but I do not like short barreled rifles so ended up having a Winchester M52 barrel installed.  Now, I have a great shooting rifle.

So go ahead and buy or build what you want.  I think you will have a great deal more pleasure if you go the route of the Winchester M75 but, no matter how you end up at the finish line, enjoy the race.

Mannyrock,

Sunday pop came home with a gun box under his arm... Says to me he never had a real nice bolt action 22RF. So I bought one!!

He bought a Savage MKII it's that one mentioned earlier, super nice walnut stock with ebony forend tip and pistol grip cap. Fine bluing, silky smooth action, slender 24" barrel and a nice trigger. We went and shot it last night.  It would not outshoot my 880 Marlin, but everything shot under 1" @ 50Y. And many went under 1/2". Eley Tenex when into one ragged hole shot aft shot. Say 5/8".

He mounted a cheapie BSA sweet17 scope till he gets a nicer scope down the road. All told he spent just over 500$. He is very happy and has a fine looking and shooting rifle.

If I was picky all I could complain about would be shrapnel mags and mag release. Otherwise I am very impressed with this Savage.

One thing I'd say is that it's hard to go wrong with most .22s made from ~1900 - 1960. Were some dogs produced? Sure, but I've had ~30 examples of early .22s over the years (still own about 1/2 of those) and with few exceptions I've been happy with them. As long as they're serviceable and have a shiney bore, I find it hard to resist buying one when the price is right.

Oh I see the third shot now!! It is camouflaged by the "X" it's nestled in.

There are some Rugers that shoot, and then there are some that can be made to shoot, and then there are a few Ruger tomato stakes  ;D

That pressure pad on the fore end along with the angled action screw are the two main points of concern on the Ruger M77's I've encountered.

We have a 77/22 mag that is good.  Needed a trigger job, but once I did that it is as good a 22Mag as I have seen.  It is stainless and synthetic, takes the bumps of farm life, and is a keeper.

don't pass on the marlins i picked up a 81dl pre 1945 gun stock was very rough had wrong trigger guard on it would not cock properly trigger was draging on the guard took about a 32nd of an inch off works great and accurate. i all so picked up a 25 model marlin put a inexpensive simmons acope now its a tack driver my wife took it away from me after shooting it. you don't want to be on the receiving end with her. i bought her a 10-22 also she likes no scope .she really likes scoped rifles. 8)

My precision .22 is a CZ American but will admit I had to do a trigger job on it since the spring was way too stiff.  Got one of those set of trigger springs and used the next to the weakest.  Lightest trigger I own now.

Well I sure don't have your problem.. The 69 winchester is the rifle you looked at with the safety on the rear of the bolt. The 69A on the other hand has a trigger blocking safety and both when in good shape shoot very well indeed. I would go for one of the later model 69A's with the grooved receiver or just save a bit of money and buy one already drilled and tapped for a scope which really jurts the clollectability. Magazines are easy to find and are around $10 NEW from Brownells.. the same mag fit the M75 (and the M52's) and is a superior design.. The M75 is a M69A actions with a heavier match grade action(6 groove rather than 4 groove). Getting 3/4 inch groups with either is simple.. The 75's sporters can often be found drilled and tapped at a great savings and just remount a scope and find the ammo it likely..Also the 75 sporters have a bit better wood than the 69A's. Then comes the 52's..the king of rimfires, but with it's own faults. The older 'A' and 'pre-A' rifles with the slow lock have issues with receiver cracking problem at safety lever.. The 'B' models have triggers reminiscent of the M75, good but not great. From the 'C' models up these are fantastic rifles but a 52C (or higher) sporter gets into the $1000's pretty quick. The good news is the copies made and sold by Browning and Winchester. They have the 'micro-motion trigger with great looking/feeling stocks! They also shoot great.. I've close to a dozen 69's, 75, 69A's, and 52's,, and love tham all but accuracy is better with the CZ 452 2E LUX. the safety is backwards operating but you can adapt although the used to be a maker that produced a replacement lever to allow it to operate like a M70. That creates a very danerous situation though and I no longer see it being sold. The trigger is good but I replaced mine with a Timney unit and it's now a little scarey! The long barrel and Reminton SubSonic HP ammo makes it almost noiseless and deadly accurate in the squirrel woods. Enjoy the choices..perhaps one of each!

I just brought home a Winchester 67A today. I love these long barreled single shots. I've been shooting a Target model Chipmunk for the last couple of years. It's got a chunky stock with an adjustable buttplate and a globe front sight combined with a Williams receiver sight on the back and it's the most accurate iron sighted .22 rifle I own.

   Nothing wrong with the CZs..I have a 452 "special" with the checkered , hardwood stock..haven't missed the walnut. ..But if you must have walnut, it is available in a Savage.  Here is one available;
           http://www.reedssports.com/Product/product.taf?_function=detail&_ID=14317&pc=2449

   Savage used to make a real beauty and there are probably some available with a distributor somewhere;
     http://www.chuckhawks.com/savage_mark_II_classic22.htm

Don't underestimate the Savage Accutrigger.. how much would a specialized trigger cost for another rifle ?  If you can get one..

Is newer any better?

Ive had new sporter .22's I was not satisfied with accuracy right out the box (break in required i guess) a ruger 77/22m and a Mossburg , and some used old rimfires that were impressivly accurate.

Some of the more surpriseingly accurate std sporting rifles.

Marlin model 81
Marlin 981T
