What kind of target do you use?
« on: February 07, 2012, 01:32:19 AM »
What kind of target do you practice too.
I am pretty cheap, so I use ceap old paper pie plates and those stick on, glo in the dark dots.
I thinkif you practice on small targets you make it easier to refine your skills---I can talk about skills, I had one back in 19 & 54, but I forgot where I put it.
I am not saying that I can erase the dots with a big ol hole but, I figger if I can keep it on a pie plate at 15 yards that will do the work I am intending to get done.
Blessings

Have to agree with the small targets. The old addage" aim small, miss small" works for me too. A magic marker or sticker on a box, paper plate, or scrap wood is my norm as well. I have also found that I enjoy longer shots, like fist sized objects at a hundred yards. May not hit, but makes me better closer and keeps me in practice at various ranges and handguns require lots of practice.

If I am not wanting to record shots such as in load development, I will use the hanging metal plates in 6" 3" & 2".

The only time I use paper targets is when I am developing  a load.  After that, I walk the property and shoot at targets that present themselves to learn as much as I can about the load, the gun and how they work with me.  Rifle or revolver, I treat them the same.  Field positions, not bench rest and targets like rocks, stumps, 5 gallon pails, paint cans, etc are good for finding out if you can figure range conditions and hit them.  I only make two or three trips to a "range" a year.

When I was competing, we used the B28 silhouette a lot.  Also the 25 and 50 yards bullseye targets.  I guess I could still hit them.

printed targets , sheet of paper (-shoot near center then try to hit first hole), target covered with a shirt , plastic bottles , tin cans , swingers (steel targets not what some were thinking), gongs , rocks ,dirt clods and anything else worth shooting that is legal.

Shooting different targets gives a variety of sight pictures

When I am shooting from a bench I shoot *1/2 X 11 paper and keep it inn a 3 ring binder All the data written on the sheet.

I'm training my daughter in law to protect herself and her kids. I am using roughly man size targets and shooting from close up. No aiming point she shoots at the center of mass. I try to keep the targets clean so she can see each shot she launches. I want her to have confidence that she can do the job from across the room.

The grand kids have graduated to plastic pop bottles with BB guns from about 20 yards I have them shoot plastic bottles to minimize danger of ricochet. This summer I am going to toss chunks of wood into my fast flowing ditch and let them shoot the moving targets. I am very happy with the way they have taken to shooting. I try not to over teach. Let them shoot lots of bullets and have fun.

I keep in shape by plinking at shotgun shells at 15-20 yds with pistols and 25-30 yds with rifles. [When there is someone else at the range I cheat and shoot a little low so most of them are kicked around by the splatter]

I really like dirty bird targets for quick group testing and offhand shooting.  I like shooting tin cans and making them jump.  ;)  I like my shooting tree for speed practice.  Paper plates with a 1" square in the middle work well.  ;)

A roll of butchers paper, a staple gun and a sharpie for informal paper punching.
12 , 6 and 3" steel cut from scrap I beam  for that neat clang sound.
The butchers paper also makes a great backer for paper targets.

Targets that go ping when you hit them are good. Nothing like immediate reinforcement.

Willam, check this out.  I gho cheap by reusing the unused side of previously printed material.  Save the site as a favorite, select the type of target you want and run off whatever you need each time you go out.

For most of my informal range work, I staple up a full size combat silhouette target, backwards, then using a variety of paper plates with 1, 2 ,3 ,5 etc inch holes cut in them as templates,  use black spray paint to apply aiming points, the number and size dependent on what I m shooting, and how far.  With an accurate scope sighted rifle, I might have 40 aiming dots on the paper.  Along with the use of a spotting scope, it saves a lot of trips down range during load testing.

While eggs arent as cheap, they are a blast.  Small target, but when you finally hit one it is a nice little explosion.  Then if you are lucky the egg all over will attract any varmints in the area then you can use those.

William;
I usually shoot either down in my woods (you've been there)..or in my friends gravel pit (about 35 acres in size).
When I take kids shooting, I make it fun for them..animals crackers (shoot those lions & elephants) and Necco wafers.
Both break up nicely and can be left for the birds or to bio-degrade.  For myself, I use those little round, dime sized, florescent stickers Walmart sells for garage sales stickers.  I stick them on regular 'puter printer paper..3 down each side and two staggered in the middle.
I use blue, and the florescent green and orange..the yellow doesn't show well against the white paper.

I'm cheap too so I get the "six bull" paper targets from Dixie Gun Works. Last time I bought they were six bucks per hundred so that works out to a penny a bull. They are intended to be muzzleloading rifle targets but the 3" diameter black makes a good 25 yard pistol or 50 yard iron sight rifle target and with a scoped rifle they work fine at 100 yards, so those are about the only target I need. I don't frequently deal with DGW so when I do order something from them I always tack 100 or 200 targets onto the order to sort of spread out the shipping cost and keep a supply on hand.

When I am not using paper targets I use clay pigeons.  Do not cost that much, small target and biodegradable.  Set them on a bank at 10 yards, you get the instant sat when they are hit. 8)
