AR Kits and accuracy rersults?
« on: January 21, 2004, 04:18:57 AM »
I recently bought a Rock River Arms stripped lower on the thought of building an AR varmit rifle.  Any thoughts or experience with who's upper kit I should purchase to finish up the project.  I wish to shoot light bullet 50-60 grain.   I am seeking the best accuraccy for the buck.  Several companies make complete kits less stripped lowers, they are where my intrest really lies.  Kits I have looked at are: model one, uses shaw barrels, olympic arms a little higher in price is it worth it, rock river arms, I believe they sell wilson barrles.   I am in no hurry to build but plan on maybe trying to buy/ build at tax return time.  Very interested in results some of you folks might have had with these kits.  Would consider other kits.  My hope and need is to keep the upper kits in the 500.00 price range.  Will only consider flat top and 20" barrel.  Twist rate of maybe 1-10, not sure on that.  Have had several give opinions on that topic.  PLease help me if you can.  I am an avid reader here, enjoy the comedy and the advice this diverse group offers up but rarely post.  Never owned a black gun so if I seem a little ignorant on the topic its because well I am.  Thanks Sharps-Nut

Hey Sharps-nut,

I just began a love affair with a black rifle.  I have a Bushmaster V-match.
(flat top free floated barrel, 20".

I LOVE IT!  Try a Bushy Upper, I think you'll like it.  They are chrome lined bores, 1-9 twist.

According to Bushmaster, the 1-9 twist is correct for bullet weights of 45-75 Grain.

Hope this helps, MH

Thanks for the response.  I really never thought much of these but everyone seems to think they are super accurate.  Is the the bushy very high for a complete upper.  Everyone else seems to be in the 500-600 range for a true complete upper.  How about accuracy from yours.  I may be giving these new fangled things with no exposed hammer to much credit but folks seem convinced they will print 1/2 to 3/4 groups at 100 yards.  Thanks again.  S-N

I honestly couldn't tell you the price of an upper.  I bought my AR complete.  About $800.

Mine will shoot cheap factory ammo under 1" at 100 yards.  I love it, haven't touched any of my other guns since I bought it. Do yourself a favor and get one.

I built a gun up with all Olympic arms parts, I did all the work myself.  It would shoot .75 inch groups at 100 yards.  I could not have been more proud!  It is really easy and fun to build an ar15 that really shoots good. I think you should give it a  try, especially since you already have your reciever.  I do recommend that you spend a little extra money and buy a kit that already has the upper assembled, headspaced, and testfired.  That could save you some headache if you don't have the correct tools.  Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
