Caught a bad virus on this site.
« on: January 30, 2012, 02:09:53 PM »
I bought a used T/C Contender a while back, and liked it quite a bit.  Had a 10" 22 hornet, and a super 16 223.  Nice carbine, nice pistol.  Woodchucks are doomed.  Also there is something that I really like about the single action gun.

I started looking at rifle barrels so that I could have as much fun with bigger targets.  I did quite a bit of online searching and lurking on various websites and fora ( is that the plural of forum, as in data and datum? ).  Somehow I ended up on this site, and am no longer looking for long Contender barrels.  I have caught a bad case of Handi-holism.  I bought a 243 ultralight and sent it in to be fitted with 22 hornet and 7.62x39 barrels.  I also picked up a 45LC BC carbine.

Who knows what might be next.  From what I've seen here, once Handi-holism sets in, there is no relief.  I haven't seen a single post referring sufferers to an HA forum.

I believe there is a 12 barrel program you can Join.

You had me scared there for a minute; I thought this post was about your computer. :o  Before you know it you will have stubs, rechambers and 12-15 barrels on 10 different receivers.

Thanks, Dinny

Yes, "fora" is the plural of forum. And also yes, there appears to be no cure for Handiholics... only temporary relief from more acquisitions. I myself thought I was cured a while back, going from 13+ Handis to my current three (five if counting rimfires) - but it wasn't a real cure, merely another dip in my financial situation.

That may be the only way to halt the spread of the condition - putting food on the table, and gas in the vehicle ahead of Handi temptations.

Welcome, and feel free to share your suffering here.  ;D ;)

Welcome- and it seems there are several stages to the virus, and as much as we tend to suffer no one has gone in for the vaccination, wives send us, but we hit a bunny trail and don't quite make it for the shot.  ;D    Glad you found us, the folks here have a wealth of good info to share. Better make lots of good chicken noodle soup... it won't help but it will taste awful good while you plan your next Handi project.

I think I was drawn to the Handis because I will be able to hide my addiction from my wife a little longer. By the time she understands the whole "fitted barrel" concept and relates it to having too many guns, I should have a nice collection stockpiled. First stop...357!

Currently, I only have my .223 Ultra Varmint that I bought 3-4 weeks ago.

There is only one cure:  The 35 Whelen.  That wil slow the virus spread down, if not eliminate it entirely.

Even that won't work, there's more than one H&R Whelen, at least three versions, 26" RMEF Ultra, 22" Handi (in at least 3 different stock designs btw!) and the 22" with sights! :D There's no end to it, I'm just warnin ya, been there, done that.....50 some Handis later and still goin!!  ???

Dang Tim, you must be slowing down or getting better (CURE WISE).
Last count was 63 and 2 extra frames and 3 extra barrels.
Someone said try getting two and calling them in the morning.
Didn't work, just made it worse!!!

Getting two in one day and calling in the morning does NOT help.  trust me.  Just makes things worse. :'(

That was also my first thought.  I was first stricken in "95" with the purchase of a .410 Pardner for my son, and it's gotten progressively worse.  I've sought help at this "HOA" (Handi Owners Anonymous) meeting site, but all they do is prescribe more medication (barrels, stocks sets, receivers). Quick shut off your computer, before it's too late........................Sorry! your now completely infected with the HandiVirus.  ;D

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Geezer56:  WRONG!  I have a .35 Whelen and really like it.  It is devastating on Black Bears at 10 to 15 yards from a stand over bait.  My Dad used it to kill a nice Moose, one shot one Moose.  Had a couple of fail to fires when I first bought it back in the mid 90s.  Sent it back to NEF, they fixed it, no FTF since.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Don't worry LT,  I've sold a few duplicates and bought a few replacements plus a couple new ones to bring the total up a little, modified some to better suit my needs/wants, not done yet by a long shot, you can count on it, still hankerin for a .375 something!  ;D

Dinny,

Don't worry the only two affected areas from this virus is the brain and the wallet.

Kinslayer, if you're into slug guns and big bores, I would think it could also affect your shoulder, and, if scoped, possibly your eyebrow.  Made the mistake of getting comfortable behind a short eye relief scope on a 45-70 and just missed the 'coon eye look.
