357 mag which one?
« on: January 30, 2012, 06:17:45 AM »
well i am sending in for a barrel but am torn as to which one. i will be reaming this out to a Max. The 18 1/2 inch Talo is great cause it has open sight also but the standard 22 would gain my extra velocity. Any opinions which one has performed better in a Maxi for deer out to about 150.

The .357 Mag and Maxi were made to fire from a revolver.  My 16.5 inch Handi Maxi still has twice the barrel length of a revolver.  I see no appreciable loss in velocity after cutting it from 22 inches.

I have the 22" 357mag reamed to max.  This barrel is heavy.  Done again, I'd get the lighter Halo barrel.

I lack the experience and expertise of many on this forum but have recently been doing a lot of research on loads/velocities/performance for various 45LC and .454 options and the consensus among people far more knowledgeable than myself who have done extensive ballistics testing seems to be that the most velocity one is going to achieve with a pistol cartridge (unless I suppose one gets into very specific progressive burn loads) is arrived at by 16"-18" of barrel travel. It seems unlikely that 3.5" of travel will deliver any appreciable increase in velocity over 18.5". And if that 22" barrel is heavy, go 18.5 ;)

I have the 22" reamed to MAX, it has iron sights on it. I bought it before there was a Talo barrel. With the 357 MAX, I feel that the shorter barrel will perform nearly as well and it would come with the iron sights. I am to the age that I need a scope, but I lie the idea that you have iron sights to use if you want them. Give the choice today, I would take the Talo barrel in either 357 or 44 mag.

CWlongshot- since you have them both have you experienced any true reduction in velocity or performance with one over the other even with 357 loads. i am looking at it as I definitely want open sights on it as my kids will shoot 38 out of it this year and want to have opens for them. I am going to ream it to maxi. If I would gain say 150 to 200 ft second with the 22 over the 18 I would just get the 22 and get open sights installed. I will use the maxi for deer and if the extra speed adds a little energy I want to get that. The talo is about 40 dollars more with the sights and figure I can get the barrel and put sights on it for a little extra than I will pay for the talo. if the gain isnt that great I will get the talo with sights already installed and be done with it.

I have one that is 18" and one that is 22". There's no appreciable difference in velocity between the two. The shorter barrel would have less weight and better balance. My 22"er is getting shortened to 16.5". ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I have not chronographed the loads form my 17" barrel...

But my 180G SSP loadings are just under 2300 Fps 15" from the muzzle.

Dinny is spot on, the shorter barrel handles better, is better balanced making it FAR handi-er!!  (OH YES, the punn is intended!! ::) )

In my case, my 17" is a factory MAXI barrel and much lighter contour than current mag barrels.

Dinny- I think the 18 1/2 is what I am going with. Thanks for the responses everyone. After thinking about it i really dont feel like dealing with getting the 22 inch barrel drilled and tapped.  Since the Talo has them already that is what im getting so I guess I will be getting on that waiting list that Tim has for the maxi reamer when the gun comes back. Will be sending the receiver in tomorrow. Then to order dies and brass and bullets and powder. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated for components.

I'm using 357 mag dies for maxi OK.  Haven't had to full length size yet.  Cheaper and more available.

I have the Talo .357 and a couple 22" Handi's in other calibers.  I think the overall length of the Talo is much more preferable.  I wish the rear sight had repeatable adjustments, but I can fix that one day down the road.

Kids absolutely love to shoot this thing!  With my own 140-gr hard cast bullets I can make 100-rounds of .357 Magnum Lite for around $5.75 and the overall length and weight of the talo is perfect for a day of hunting or plinking.
