I tried stocks from "Gunstocks Inc"
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:30:23 AM »
Like to change things , so I purchased a pair of butt stocks for Handi's from "Gunstock Inc.". These are semi finished...you final fit and finish.  I originally got these to put on a pair of "Sportster" frames. There was .what is called proud metal, where there is not enough wood to fit the action properly. So change of plans...they do fit the SB2 frames (see pics). They are an excellent design. The monte carlo cheek piece is near perfect in height. Better than any other after-market wood. Now to find some matching wood for the forends....

Wow! Those stocks are really nice, which model number are they?  What type of wood?

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Sobeit,

Congratulations on great work and a great result!  I too have recently purchased a Gunstocks Inc walnut MC Cheekpiece stock and full length forend. Here's some info on my build.

Would really appreciate the benefit of your experience:

1) What stain, if any did you use on the stocks pictured above? Different for the lighter and darker or just different concentrations?

2) What finish did you use and any tips?

3) Did you change the angle of the heel ? If so to what angle/dimensions?

4) What recoil pads are you using and are they grind to fit or what?

Again, great results!!! Would really appreciate your thoughts and comments on these issues.

Thank you ; Butt stocks are not stained...they are finished with Tru-oil. Then I try to match the forend by staining. Both stocks have at least 15 coats..could use a few more. The angle on the butt stock is almost random..more of a visual. Notice the lower stock angle. different on both stocks,,,length of butt pad determined that. I prefer the line on the recoil pad stock..again a visual oreference. Cheated on butt pads , found some that were smaller than stock contour and worked wood down to that.  Remember on classic stocks...straight lines , no bellys..............ask questions
favorite tool rough stock down is the Standley Surform rasp/file. On that full length forend , my Contender is pictured. To be honest..contour is right but it has too much wood...should be thinner.

GSI hasn't been an advertiser here in a few years now. He gave no reason when I asked why he wasn't renewing just said he wasn't. I thought they were a good fit here as many H&R and TC guys as we have on this site.

I looked at GSI a few months ago and again today.  Something has happened, inventory is way down.
Maybe they didn't renew because they are winding down to a close.

That could be a reason. Another could be streamlining the business?

The economy isn't what it was 5 years ago. Many manufacturers are doing away with additional costs and excessive inventory since the demand for their products has lessened. That means no stockpiling of things (like slabs to be cut into blanks before turning). Instead they maintain a more limited supply of material and produce items when sales dictate. They may keep a handful of finished product available for customer turnaround instead of dozens on hand like when inventory turnover was more rapid.

Not saying that's the case with GSI. Only offering up another possibility in regard to current trend.
