2 Home-made shortys
« on: January 29, 2012, 06:00:48 PM »
I got the urge to try my hand at making a shorty this weekend...actually ended up with 2!  I took my 17HM2 down to 17" and the 280 down to 20".  I cut the barrels with a sawzall, and then filed them square.  I used a dremel tool with a cone-shaped grinding stone to make the crown.  Then I used fine sand paper to smooth out the rough edges.  I shot the 17 and it seems to be shooting where it's supposed to, but didn't actually group it on paper.  Havn't had the chance to shoot the 280, but am anxious to see if I screwed it up or if it's gonna shoot well also.

I got the idea from another forum...A guy on there had a 16.5" HM2 that he said shot even better with the shorter barrel.  We shall see.

I have made a couple of shorties also. I find they are no less accurate than the original barrel.
Shorter the barrel the less barrel vibrations and whip.
I love shingle shots and short barrels but that is like arguing blondes brunettes and redheads.

Way to go on the gun works!

I have a couple Ultra Varmint .243's that came with heavy 24" barrels... they did not group particularly well... about 2.5" at 100 yards with pretty regular "fliers"... so I cut the barrels to 20", threaded them back to 9/16" X 24 TPI, recrowned, and added Ross Schuler muzzle brakes... they now group consistently under 1.5" and the only fliers are an occaisional cold barrel flier, right after a barrel cleaning... I can now put 10 shots into that 1.5" group... that is a significant improvement! As a bonus, they handle and look better too!  ;D
