What's with this corrosion?
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:04:11 PM »
I just took my 357 Handi out of the safe for a once-over before shooting tomorrow.  Shockingly, I found it full of corrosion!  There was some in the barrel, extractor, crown, and even in the bottom inside of the receiver.

I could barely get the suppressor off, and found rust on the threads.  I even found it caked inside the suppressor.  The crown and threads were cold blued, but everything else is factory finish.

All the other rifles in the safe are fine.  I treat them all the same.  The suppressor has lived on my 9mm carbine for years.

What's going on?  I'm using plated and jacketed bullets, Winchester primers, and Red Dot powder.

what did you wipe it down with before putting it away?
If mine go outside, they must be reprotected before storing. They corrode faster than any of my other stuff. I just bought some of this http://www.ecsautomotive.com/productdesc.php?co=a&id=1
and when i get it im going to test it good.

Oh that is more than SAD!
And Ive had it happen, too.......
Powder fouling attracts moisture, in the field and in the house. +1 on where.when you used it last; was it particularly humid?
Some powders have seemed worse than others in this regard, though I have used RedDot for some time and cant say it has been troublesome. I have a Golden Rod in my safe, and limit the 'door open time' to maintain the internal environment. I must wipe my guns down after I handle them ('acidic' hands, it seems), but I dont clean bores near as often as I used to. I do look then over, action and bores, before sticking them away, and sometimes decide a good wipe down is in order. Since Ive been using my homemade version of 'Ed's Red' this 'crusting up' has become a non-issue. If I do wipe out a bore, it is usually with one ER patch down and out to push out the crud and another just to coat the bore. A clean patch through before shooting and they settle down with only a few fouling shots to warm me and the gun up.

The Handis do seem to have this problem. I think it was H110 or else H4427. I used once and I didn't wipe out the barrel as I was gonna shoot it again in a day or two. I got ready to shoot it and WOW! I thought I'd ruined a new barrel. Took some cleaning but turned out OK.

It don't take long. Don't ever have this problem with other brands ???   Flake powders don't leave little granular particles that seem to attract rust. I think they got graphite on them.

Use a good protective gun oil and those kinda problems will be in the past, Breakfree CLP is commonly available and one of the best, I've been using Eezox for well over 20 rust free years.  ;)

I had the same thing happen once with a shotgun. It wasn't ever the same, so I had it duracoated. Since then, I always have a few of the Remington dehumidifiers inside my safe. I pull one out at a time to recharge the dessicant and haven't had any problems since.

Thanks, Dinny
