44 Devil Rifle
« on: January 28, 2012, 04:07:19 PM »
Hey guys, i,m new to the forum but after buying my wife a new 44 youth and trying to get it to shoot decent I happened up on this site. I've read all the info and checked everything listed. I haven't polished the bore yet but cleaned it several times. After app. 60 rounds of various loads including win. white box it 's usable but not down to what i expect. pw season ends tues. after that i'm trying to polish the bore and go at it again. If that don't work it,s back to H&R. I have a sb2 444m and 308win that are very good shooters. I only hope to get the little 44 to shoot like them. Any suggestions?

Need some ideas on what it's doing wrong.  Is it stringing?  Do the first couple shots group, then open up?

No stringing just spread out. It's down to 2 to 2 1/2 inches at 50 yds so until the groups tighten up there it's no use going to 100. at first it was 3 to 4 inches at first. I,m going to do some polishing next week and go at it again. I've already tried every other tip i could find on this forum.

Welcome. I take it you looked in the FAQs at the top of the page. (Handi Basics)

Shot it with the forearm off? It locks up tight without forearm? No oil on Latch?

Bore and muzzle look OK? It's not an older overbore barrel?

I'm not sure it needs polished just yet, don't clean it too much.

Open sites or scope loose? Stock bolt tight?

Tim will be along shortly, Good Luck!

Welcome Txdrmy Man! If it won't shoot 2" or less 3-shot 100yd groups with factory ammo after making sure you've covered all the tips in the Handi Basics 101 sticky, call H&R and make arrangements to have it sent back for repair, ask for a call tag when you're on the phone with them and they'll cover the shipping cost.  ;)

Thanks Tim and all of you. That,s probably going to happen later this week. Yes I covered everything I could find on this site. I really started looking after reading Bull Nutria,s post on his Devil Rifle as I was experiencing the same problems. I have a sb2 444m  and a 308 bull barrel fitted by H&R and have fell in love with them. It only took a little loading variations to make them shoot under 1 inch. Hopefully I can get this one corrected. I'll let ya'll know when I get it back.    Clayton

I read the title and was expecting to either read about a hot new wildcat cartridge or a rifle built for a hunting season I had not previously been aware of. ???

Sorry to hear of your woes instead. Hopefully H&R can set this rifle straight for you.

I agree about the Magtechs.  With my CVA Scout I shot a group of three at 100 yards that had two touching and the third less than a inch away.  That's better than I've done with any of my reloads.

I understand your frustration.  I have been pretty vocal about my 44 Mag problem over the past year or so.  Went through three barrels then they replaced the rifle.  Had to send the replacement rifle back for a new barrel.  Going by what little I have fired it with the last barrel it looks promising, but have not had a chance to wring it out properly.   I shot hundreds of rounds through the first 3 barrels and ran out of ammo.  I got a set of dies for Christmas.  I am ordering some cast bullets and will give it a go in a couple of weeks when I can some loads worked up.  I also have a box of XTPs to try.  I have no shortage of brass.

One thing I know for sure.  It hates the Hornady LE.  My 45-70 handi loves them.

To follow up, my Scout also shoots 300 grain cast bullets well, almost to the same POI as the Magtechs.  The only load it didn't seem to like was one with 250 grain Keith SWC's.  I have no idea why.
