I've spoken to enough people and gotten enough responses here to put my mind at ease about the 1:14 twist. Now I have to decide which rifle I want. I'm not a big spender, by necessity, so the lower priced rifles are my choices. I need opinions on the Weatherby Vanguard, Tikka T3 Lite Stainless and Howa Lightning Stainless.

The Vanguard and the Howa are the same thing with different names. Of the three you mentioned I would buy the Tikka.

However, if I was buying a 22-250, I would put my money on a Remington VS and top it with a good scope.

That's sort of what I figured, and the Tikka was my first choice anyway. I can't swing a Remington VS, now or in the near future, since I need the extra dough for a Mathews LX. :wink:

I have always been a finnish rifle fan. So I would go with the Tikka.

Up here, the difference in cost between the Tikka and the Remington would be about $160. In the States, I would think the difference would be even less. If you want a serious target quality rifle for the long haul, the VS is hard to beat. The issues I don't care for with the Tikka T3 is one large action size fits all calibers and the plastic parts. The big question with those parts is will they hold up.

I know its not on your short list but I bought a Savage 12BVSS in 22-250 last summer. Laminated stock, 26" stainless fluted barrel with a 1 1/2# accu trigger for $500 new total. Had a $40 bedding job done to it and it shot 1/2-3/4" groups with remington factory ammo and dropped to 1/4" with several handloads and ended up at .150-.200 with hornady v-maxes and IMR 4064. Not much in it and a very accurate performer as well...just a thought.

I would NOT over look a Savage. It could be a real mistake to do so. At this point in time they are about the most accurate, out of the box factory rifle going today. For the price you get a lot of value and accuracy. Lawdog
