New Handi Project: 7mm-07

So far so good! Today I got my 7mm-08 dies, .307 brass and 7mm bullets together. Sizing the brass down was a breeze and I really like the looks of this round. The receiver is off to H&R and should come back to D. White as a 20" lightweight barrel. He'll cut the rim counterbore in there and mail it back to me. I hope to have 20-30rds loaded with 4 or 5 different bullet and powder combinations for testing sometime before I leave. If the time slips away I'll be certain to thoroughly document everything for when I return.

I'm not overly worried about it. If it does, I'll go back to using -08 brass and change the extractor back to the OEM one.

I just wound up with a Handi in 7-08 that I didn't have a real need for........  Hmmmmm......  I can't wait to see a picture!

From the outside it will appear just like any other Handi rifle. The rim counterbore is the only difference. ;)


I could take a pic of a dummy round I assembled today. Is that something you would like to see?

No frills, the barrel's getting fitted to the same receiver that my .356 is one and it will get a new TDC checkered forend to match the stock. Probably will get a matte black Duracoat finish.

Great project Dinny!  I love my 7-08, and it loves H4350!  I shoot 120 gr BT's over it and also 150 gr Corelock's close enough to the same point of aim that it makes no difference.  I had heard that about the 7-08, that it often will throw most bullets into the same place on the target with no adjustment needed when changing bullet wt's.  Of course that would not hold true 300 yds down range, but at 100, it seems to make no difference.  A rimmed version?  H&R should offer all rimmed cartridges as a matter of course.  I'd like to see the rimmed Marlin .308 in a handi, but I guess the standard .308 and 7-08 both eject fine so there's no real need.  But I still want it!  44 Man

Larry did the  7mm/07  rim cut for me a good while back.I don't have any trouble extracting the rimless brass.I suspect you won't either.
I really think the rimmed is the way to go in a handi.  G66

Dinny, I'm jumping in your canoe again.  I just have to make up my mind if I want to use my light seven or just get another one....decisions....decisions.....decisions. 

Ya know, it seems to me Maxi brass is becoming more available, and that has to be due to the increasing popularity of the round.  Just look at our own reamer rentals.  I think if more Handiholics and other single shot addicts get into the rimmed cartridges like the .307 and the .356 the brass might just follow along.

If your "light 7" is the one you capped the pidgeon @ 300 yards, I would buy another gun.   Even if it is just the rim cut I wouldn't mess with the chamber of a gun that shoots that well.

Tom, that's kinda what I was thinking...."if the poop don't stink, don't stir it".  I'll do it with another rifle....hopefully another light 7.

OK Dinny, I'll bite.  What's the next project ??? ???   I've already made up my mind to do the .307/.308.

I did a web search on ".356 Single Shot" and found a guy, Edward, Grasshopper on the 24 Hour Campfire forum.  He has a .356/.358  Ruger No. 1.  He's a friend of 44Man here and also a friend of a friend of mine in Saginaw.  He's from the central Lower Peninsula. (We won't hold that against him ::) )
