Does anyone here have a green mountain replacement barrel in 58cal ? Does it shoot better with conicals or ball? It states it's for 1inch TC receivers..... Besides
The big boar what other TCs are 1inch?

The 58 caliber green mountain barrels have a slow 1:70 twist for rb. I don't own one, but I'm sure you could shoot certain conicals with reasonable accuracy with that barrel.

Renegades are all 1"

Hawkens in 54 and 58 are 1"

Green Mountain on their web site state that this barrel is round ball specific .... But that twist is awful slow.....?

54 and 58 cal hawkens and all renegades have 1" barrels

I have a .58 caliber (1:70 twist) Green Mountain barrel with a TC Hunter Peep sight on a TC Hawken stock.

It shoots OK.

Why even bother with conicals? That big ball will do anylthing that needs doing. Here's a doe I shot from the box stand you see in the background (something like 70 yards). I had to track her a full six feet, but the blood trail was good.

QUESTION!......

Will the GM 58 barrel fit in a TC big boar stock? GM states this is for a Renegade/Hawkin stock only...??

the t/c big boar is a renegade. i have nothing against roundballs but in my opinion they're about as aggravatin' to load as sabots so i shoot maxi's and lee r.e.a.l. bullets in my grn mtn slow twist bbls and they shoot as good as i can. the lee's especially work well for me. my opinion and yer welcome to it. luck and have a good'en friend, bubba.

Other than minor differences in the stocks they are the same.

I should have read this thread before starting one with a question answered here.
Semisane, looking at the notes on your target you provided in your post, it looks like you loaded a 58 cal PRB with 85 gr. of FFg. Is that the load you took the deer with? What is the recoil of the 58 compared to a 54 of equal load?

MikeC, I was using 95 grains GOEX FFg when I took that doe. That's a long heavy barrel that soaks up recoil. It's no more than what I would classify as "moderate" with loads in the 95 grain range, and "light to moderate" with 85 grains. At any rate, 35 or 40 shots with 85/95 grain loads in an afternoon shooting session do not bother me at all. I start noticing recoil with charges of 105 grains or higher. Though even those loads aren't real bad. They just aren't as accurate for me as the 85 - 95 grain loads. Compared to a .54 - a slightly noticeable difference, but not much.

That 1;70 twist is optimum for RB!

I personally like the concept of Forsythe Rifling. Been hoping to build a RB only underhammer for a long time. Forsythe is actually around 1:104 up to 1:130 ratio. Stabilizes 62+ caliber balls very well.

Well I got my 58 in Febuary and today I finally got to shoot it. One word- Awesome!

I've been looking at those myself for a possible build Wiley. But DANG - a 1.25" round barrel has got to be a bit on the the heavy side.

The Green Mountian 58 drop-in will not be available until September. I have yet another Renegade Hunter stock waiting for a 58 barrel. Since June I have had two other stocks prepped for a GM 58. Both of those are now 56 smoothies. If the GM58 doesn't show up in Sept this stock may end up a 62 smoothbore. We will see.

update: I got a nice GM 58 from bubba50. 32inchs is a looooooooong little doggie.

update: Midway [offers GM barrels at a lower price] has discontinued barrel #255271. That is the 58.
They had been pushing the available date back, now it appears they gave up.
