What calibers? 742-7400
« on: January 12, 2012, 04:27:15 PM »
What all calibers was the 742's and the 7400's chambered in? I was thinking 243, 270, 308, 3006, 35 whelen were the only ones, but then I saw a 7400 in 280 on Gun Broker. I would love to have one in 7-08 but I don't think they exist.

Find one in 308 or 243 and rebarrel.
Only a gun smith charge away to get what you want. 7-08, 260, 338 Fed, 338-06 all can be done.

I am pretty sure you could find one at Grices .And I have also see the Maple stocked version in 7mm-08 on gun broker.

I've seen the 7600 pump in 7-08 but not a 7400. Never thought of rebarreling one. Who makes 7-08 barrels for the 7400? Any idea on price? I do know a few good smith's that could handle the conversion.

Find a .243, remove the barrel and send it (and your $$) to   http://www.deltagunshop.com/clearwater_reboring/rebore_prices.html

or another shop specializing in reboring barrels.

Reboring the barrel to a larger diameter in the same cartridge family is fairly straightforward.

Which is the better of the 2 rifles, the 742 or the 7400? may start looking for a 243 to rebarrel to 7-08. Thanks

           742s were made in 6mm Rem. and 243 . The 740 ( predecessor of the 742 ) was chambered in .244 Rem.

The 7400 is a better gun than the 742 , because of it's better bolt design !  742s have been around since 1960 and alot of them are worn out , they're a pig in a poke when you buy one . Any 7400 is going to be at least 20 years newer than the newest 742 , and they don't wear like the 742s did !
