H&R missfire
« on: December 31, 2011, 08:38:57 AM »
I recently attempted to lighten the trigger on my h&r 223, well I accomplished that, but now it misfires. The primer looks like the firing pin barrely hit it. My question is what did I break inside? I filed on the trigger and the hammer. its about a 2.5lb pull. Did I break a spring or something like that? Did I file too much? I just cant figure out what I did wrong? I tried squezzing the trigger harder and faster making sure it comes all the way back but it still will missfire, sometimes it does shoot but it misses alot. I just want to know what I need to replace. Thank you.

That's the problem with too light a trigger, it doesn't always work well with the transfer bar, it drops too soon, replacing the t-bar with one that's taller, either the old style or the latest version, or a new trigger extension may help, but ultimately you may have to restore the trigger parts to factory minimum of about 3-3½lbs, lots on misfires and failures to fire in the FAQs.

Thanks Tim.
So to get it back to factory I should replace the trigger and the hammer? Is the transfer bar the thing behind the fire pin?

Yes, the transfer bar is just behind the firing pin when the hammer is cocked, you may be able to keep it in the up position with exagerated follow thru on the trigger, but probably not, pull the trigger all the way to the rear quickly, not the best for accurate rifle shooting tho! Depending on how much you removed from the trigger and  hammer engagement surfaces, you may be able to get by just replacing one of them.
